http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/evening-chronicle-news/2012/05/21/72703-31011254/? It comes exactly five years after “reclusive billionaire” Mike Ashley sent shockwaves across the North East with his £56m buy-out of Sir John Hall’s stake. And today - as the Chronicle marks the anniversary of Ashley taking the reins at St James’ Park - his former right-hand man paid tribute to the Toon Army. Mort issued a rallying cry to fans as they embark on their European adventure and said he loved his time in Newcastle. The 46-year-old head of international law firm Freshfields’ leisure sector group said: “I’m delighted to see the way the season has gone and the progress that has been made. For Newcastle United to get into Europe is great news. “I was the chairman of Newcastle for 12 months and I loved my time there. The thing to say is that the thing that stood out for me were the games at St James Park. “It’s the most amazing stadium and to spend time with the supporters who follow their local club gives you a great appreciation for people’s enthusiasm.” Mort ended Freddy Shepherd’s 10-year reign as chairman of Newcastle just months after Ashley secured the majority shares of the club in 2007. After securing the club, Ashley made his long-time friend and adviser Mort carry out an internal review of the club’s affairs. During his time in the North East, he clinched the return of Tyneside legend Kevin Keegan amid euphoric scenes at St James’ Park. But in October 2009, Mort was named in a two-week FA arbitration panel during which Keegan claimed he had been unfairly dismissed. The ex-Newcastle manager was eventually handed a £2m pay-out after being forced to buy Uruguayan Ignacio Gonzalez despite only seeing him on YouTube. However Mort won favour with the fans as the face of the club as Ashley shied from the limelight. In September 2007 the pair squeezed into the Bigg Market’s Blu Bambu to share a beer with fans following Newcastle’s 2-0 win against Barnsley in the Carling Cup. It was after Mort’s departure that the air turned sour inside St James’ Park and the tide turned on Ashley’s time in the North East. But Mort today said it was the passion of the Newcastle fans that impressed him most about Newcastle United. Mort said: “It’s clearly a wonderful place. It’s not just a passionate club but a passionate city. It’s a big club in a big city. “I’m delighted that the club is doing so well and that they’ve finished the season so well is great news.” Mort was also responsible for the formation of the Newcastle United foundation which hopes to reach children and families who may not have been engaged by other agencies. Former chairman Sir John Hall, who sold up to Mike Ashley last summer, handed £50,000 back to the club to kick-start the charity It’s been a turbulent time under his ownership, with relegation, demonstrations, managerial sackings and despair, followed by a return to the top flight and a sense of stability few fans could have expected. There’s also been controversy with the renaming of St James’ Park, but also the club now seems to have a financial model which is working both on and off the field. http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20120516/cheick-achieves-english-goal_2281670_2774300?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote may be best known for some great passing on the pitch, but he has also just achieved a great pass in the classroom with help from Newcastle College. Tutor Vicki Frith, who has been teaching English courses at Newcastle College for the past ten years, has helped French-speaking Tiote, from the Ivory Coast, pass an English Language exam. Tiote's training schedules prevented him from coming into college classes, so Vicki arranged to visit him at the training ground or stadium for one-to-one coaching sessions. Vicki said: "Sometimes I'd even teach Cheick in the evenings as this was the only spare time in the day due to his schedule. He did however have to come in to college to take his exams. "Cheick is a very motivated person in both his sport and his studies. It was really rewarding to work with him and he deserves this success." But Tiote is not the only footballer that Vicki has worked with. She also taught Turkish national and former Galatasaray star, Bulent Korkmaz, who was a student at Newcastle College. Tiote said: "I'm really grateful to Vicki. Trying to do this without her support would have been so much more difficult. I'm really pleased to have passed and much more confident about my English as a result - I just need to work on my Geordie now!" Sheran Johnson, head of the Teaching Development Centre said: "At Newcastle College we aim to treat every student as an individual and support them whatever their particular circumstances. "For Cheick we had to be particularly flexible and create a bespoke learning package for him, but it's not unusual for our dedicated tutors like Vicki to often go that extra mile to help students achieve their personal goals." Tiote is just one of a number of successful adults gaining qualifications in a range of subjects at Newcastle College. The college is supporting Adult Learners' Week this week (12th-18th May), the UK's largest annual festival of learning; inspiring thousands of people each year to discover how learning can change their lives. Not fussed who wins the title, though if i'm honest i think Man City will have too much for us and judging by Mancini's quotes this week they are taking us very seriousely. -
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/01/alan-pardew-newcastle-united-chelsea? Alan Pardew will be back on familiar territory when his Newcastle United players arrive at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. A few years ago he developed something of a fixation with José Mourinho, the then Chelsea manager, and spent part of his free time shadowing the "Special One". "I know Chelsea well," said Pardew. "Before I got this job and moved north, Chelsea was perhaps the team I visited most. I did a big study of Mourinho, how he played and how he got that unbeaten record at home." Along the way Mourinho, now coaching Real Madrid, invited him behind the scenes. "I took in Chelsea's training ground a couple of times," said the Newcastle manager, whose family home in Surrey is handily placed for that facility while also being a relatively easy commute from Stamford Bridge. "I just wanted to get my head round their incredible record at home under Mourinho. They must have gone two-and-a-half seasons without losing at home and José had done that at Porto before that. It wasn't just about great players, there was obviously something else going on. I came away with a couple of things." Many of Roberto Di Matteo's squad are familiar faces. "I know Chelsea's players very well," Pardew said. "They're re-motivated now. The fact that it was reported they needed to be replaced because they lacked legs has now worked on the other side of the coin. They're proving everybody wrong, that's what great players do." Di Matteo's Champions League finalists are sixth, one point behind the fifth‑placed Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur, who visit Bolton Wanderers night standing fourth, courtesy of superior goal difference. "It's going to be a big night for Champions League qualification, there's no getting away from that," said Pardew. "After Chelsea we've still got two more games left where things can change again but Wednesday will be significant." His Newcastle team ended a run of six successive wins with a 4-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic on Saturday and, on returning to training, the players were greeted by the chilling sight of a mobile cryotherapy unit parked at their weekday headquarters. It was filled with individual ice baths in which Pardew's first‑teamers plunged to hasten their physical recovery from the Wigan game, while perhaps also imbuing them with an extra mental edge. "I don't think there'll be any problem with the psychology of our team now," he said. "It has to be a bad time to play Chelsea but we're looking for a big reaction." Pardew accepts Newcastle may yet end up in the Europa League and is duly anxious to finish at least fifth rather than sixth, which would shorten the summer break by requiring involvement in early qualifying rounds. "If we can't strive for fourth, it's important we strive for fifth."

http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/120427/tottenham-and-newcastle-red-alert-marquez-snubs-new-deal-170? Tottenham and Newcastle have been put on red alert after Espanyol midfielder Javi Marquez snubbed a new deal at the club, paving the way for a summer exit. Marquez, 25, has been on Tottenham's radar for some time now - while Newcastle have also expressed an interest in the past. But a Premier League switch seemed unlikely after it emerged that Espanyol were ready to break the bank to keep him at his hometown club. However Marquez, who has missed much of the season through injury, has decided against renewing his deal which expires in June 2013. And to avoid losing him for nothing, Espanyol are preparing to cash in on him this summer. Atletico Madrid have been watching Marquez all season and will be a front-runner for his signature when the season ends. But the two Premier League admirers will be heartened by the fact that the midfielder is seemingly keeping his options open. He told El Mundo Deportivo: "My agent is taking a lot of calls and there are things going."

I do admit that i quite like Barca, but i can completely understand that it must be really tiresome for those in Spain. To think that their game was delayed in to the early hours of the morning just because Mourinho had a press conference is shocking.
