There's no doubt Americans are pretty defensive about our own players, more than most. Probably because we're a developing team with some decent players and a few good ones, but there's no doubt from my time on various forums since following football that there is a bias against American players due to our past shitness. The opinions on here about Altidore are coming from people who have barely seen him play and just completely off base.

We rated him. This entire dumb thing is reactions to reactions. All we want the kid to do is play well. It's unfortunate he plays where he plays, but we're not going to dislike one of our own because his shirt is weird.

He was 18 at the time in one of the worst teams the Premier League has seen. I don't think any of the Americans here go overboard when defending him, we've all seen him play very well and none of us are claiming he's anything more than decent/good striker. He did however, make a terrible choice in joining Sunderland. They don't suit him at all.

Hush now, it doesn't fit the narrative. Would you rather Altidore than Cisse? Genuine question. Right now, you bet. With both players in peak form, probably not. Altidore would provide us so much more right now, much better at holding it up and in general play. Really though, I expect Cisse will outscore him anyway, but that's mostly down to the team around him.
