He looked a fantastic buy before the injury, but really struggled when back from it. I don't know if it was Tiote being too fresh in the memory, but I got the feeling he'd been found out a bit by other teams. Either way, he didn't want to stick around so that was that. If he can get it together though, it looks like there is a player in there.

Even our scratch team was enough to frustrate Liverpool at full strength. It took a half chance off a gift and a dive for them to put the game away. They didn't do it by walking through our defence. They do that most weeks against other teams.

The Fulham game was a great chance to get our points total above our games played. Yes, that's what we've been reduced to. Anyway it was squandered, so I guess we'll just soldier on at or near the drop zone. Ki's been a huge part of us getting out of the bottom three. With him about to bugger off for the Asian games, I get the impression that we'll get worse before we get better.

As for Everton, to break out and challenge the teams above them, they need to buy players with upside potential, something you can't see in the likes of Rooney, Walcott, and Schneiderlin. They contrast starkly with Lukaku, who was a great buy when they got him from Chelsea. The best way though is like Leicester with finds like Mahrez, Kante, and Vardy. Silva found Richarlison, so maybe he can do it given the time.

I only saw the MOTD highlights, but the mad rush out for the first goal was preceded by a mad rush out to Kane who was through in a wide channel and got to the ball first. Another couple of millimeters of foot wrapped around it and it would have been an easy goal for him. The Guardian put Pickford at 65th in their poll of top players of the world. fwiw, Everton have conceded nearly a third more goals than us (28 vs 22) off nearly 30% fewer shots conceded per game (11.2 vs. 14.2). Multiply it out and Everton concede one goal every 7.2 shots conceded, for us its one per 11.6 shots conceded. That's not just Pickford, but he'll be part of it.
