Champions league qualification should be the goal every season - that is how you really build momentum on a status/financial/recruitment level and do the most that you realistically can to maintain our stated medium and long term ambitions as being something credible. Madness to suggest it would be better to be anywhere else - I might even suggest it would be better to miss out on European football altogether for one season if that gave a greater chance of sustained CL qualification in future seasons (not how it actually works, of course)
