I just don’t feel confident at all in him as a back up now. With the change to our midfield setup. Who does he come in for because of injury or rotation? I think when he has had a run in the team. He has been fine for the most part. He had a bit of a run of games under Rafa from memory and then Bruce took him out the side? Think he took a while to regain his form. He was then an important player for Howe with that high pressing style and the 4th placed season. Now we seem to be trying to retain possession a bit better and the number 6 role has changed. I don’t see where he fits and I don’t think getting cameos or the odd start here and there suit him at all. He needs to be playing regularly and he isn’t going to get that here.

Targett as bad as Longstaff yesterday FFS That’s nonsense IMO. Targett wasn’t amazing. Some of his crossing was pretty crap. But after over a year without a start. It was fairly promising. That’s the worst I’ve seen Longstaff play and he was our worst starter on the day by a mile.

I see you’ve missed off my second paragraph where I go on to say something fairly similar? It is hard to gauge because of the opposition today and also because we haven’t seen him properly since last season. But I much preferred him in that role and getting on the ball regularly. Thought the game passed him by far more when he played as one of the 8s last year. Would all depend who we’re playing, who else is in midfield with him, who else is playing wide for us on the day, how the team continues to evolve etc. For example. Bruno gets away with his slowness due to having Tino and Murphy on that side. He has legs around him. So maybe he’d get away with it in a similar setup. Joelinton on the other side we rely on him covering so much ground, sitting in for Hall, playing that channel role. Proper hybrid position and a rarity. I wouldn’t want Miley playing in a position like that.

Could be better. Could be a lot worse. Won’t be able to rotate quite as much.

I thought the opposite. I don’t think he has the athleticism to get up and down as an 8. But then again. He couldn’t play the role as Tonali is currently. As he is now everywhere and gives us much more off the ball than Bruno did.

Deserved MOTM. Barely gave it away and his only real fuck up was for the goal. But there were plenty of others at fault for that, too. Looks much better in the deeper role. I know it was against a League Two side and we dominated the ball. But he always managed to find or create space for himself. Obviously he isn’t as mobile as Tonali or as strong in a 50/50 as Bruno. But he gave us a lot of control as the 6 today. Still only 18 and all. So hopefully he gets a bit stronger and can get about the pitch a shade quicker with more minutes and as he matures.

Quite like Paul Robinson as a co-comms based on this and hearing him on 5 Live. Seems to actually know a bit about us and have agreed with a lot of his analysis.
