Seen a few 'signings of the season' articles and no sign of this guy. Obviously Salah deserves best signing awards etc but Rafa went and bought this guy who immediately, into a new league, in his first fucking game for us turned us from relegation fodder to having one of the best defences in the league. Obviously other factors too, but panic turned to calm at the back.

Rafa isn't going to be 'tempted' to another club for any reason than he does not believe he will get backing from Ashley. He quite clearly wants to stay and build a project, he's managed real madrid ffs he's not going to go and think hmmm things are good here but rather manage at that shithole london stadium. Not to say it's unlikely he'll go, just if he goes it's on Ashley not poached. On the one hand it allows Rafa to pressure Ashley if he is wanted (albeit as if he'd struggle for employment anyway) but on the other gives Ashley an excuse (not my fault he was poached)

See Poch agitating for more transfer funds or he'll walk. Their stadium seems to have cost more than twice what was estimated (who the fuck estimates these things, how do you get it that wrong?) and so apparently they need to sell to buy.

I don't think there's much chance he'll commit to a new contract without more concrete funding promises than Ashley has ever given and is likely to give (plus investment in infrastructure he has been talking about). The more likely scenario that isn't total disaster is he stays for the last year of his contract in hope of a takeover coming through.

A proportion of the £94m if goes to the club will go not just on signing on fees but on the wages, so it won't be £80m. It is also clear that Rafa wants to upgrade the facilities (he talks about this in the post match presser where he says it's important so you can attract players). If infrastructure spending is necessary to keep him does that come out of the same kitty? It would make sense even now for ashley to make this investment as he can claim it right back as value on the club when he sells it. However I have said before and said it again, Ashley does not act rationally and nor in the club's interest at all. Ashley is clearly saying everything the club generates is for Rafa. I doubt this will be enough. We don't generate enough because player values are spiraling out of control due to clubs with trillionaire owners and a decade of global marketing allowing bigger revenue streams to balance the books. This is not Ashley's fault to some extent. We also don't genreate enough because our facilities are shit so we've had to rely on fluking on some transfer fees like Sissokos. Unfortuantely even that kind of money does not go far these days.

It is quite usual for defenders new to the league to take some time with it, problem is most clubs can't afford to wait for players to get up to speed so they drop out the team and never come back. Rafa coached him excellently and his partnership with lascelles if it can be sustained and coached with rafa will be one of the best in the league in seasons to come, of course that presumes a lot.

Wonder if he has some contractual thing which means he could get away on a free if he never gets played or something.
