  1. We have no idea what's he responsible for.
  2. It's actually an exponential moving average FWIW, so it does weight toward more recent games. We can look at the individual games too and they weren't good. We were, for example, very lucky to win at Forest.
  3. Depends how much you care about estimating latent quantities from noisy data (results), especially with a small sample size. I don't visually think performances have improved either.
  4. This is just high-variance outcomes from high-volume chances, both for and against. The underlying trend has not improved. (Villa was good though.)
  5. Benteke was a Rodgers buy. The transfer committee, and Iain Graham's influence, grew significantly in the summer of 2016, which is why I mention that period specifically. They built, for a time, the best team on the planet, without spending best-team-on-the-planet money. Circa 80m for Mane and Salah was obscene. Any team would be do well to replicate their success from that period. I disagree with your characterization of their process: it was data-led value, which correlated with, but does not explicitly target, distressed sellers - and a process that Klopp often disagreed with (e.g., it is reported he wanted Brandt over Salah). I have no specific thoughts on our current process, other than I wish we had better data people. I only hope we did not see Ashworth leaving as an opportunity to concentrate our bet on Howe's coaching and talent spotting abilities. He of course should have an important role. I think Howe is mostly quite good at recruitment and better than his critics think.
  6. Liverpool's transfer committee between '16-'21 probably as good as you can get. Some big misses (Keita), but mostly massive hits.
  7. The skill required to do what he did with Bournemouth is immense, but it doesn't always scale to buying elite talent. His trading book-value PnL at Bournemouth in the Premier League was maybe zero, all said, which is reasonably hard to achieve, but not enough to close the gap on e.g. an increasingly competent talent ID at Spurs who have 2x our budget.
  8. Net balance of 8th. He's alright, but not an elite talent ID guy
  9. Going max long Howe might make more sense if he was our principal competitive advantage, but it is, whatever you think of Howe, Saudi Arabia. We should obviously hedge his failure.
  10. We’ve conceded 31 goals in our 13 league games since the start of December. This is the same as Sheffield United, but we have played one game more.
  11. You can't play like they play and have a technical deficit vs the average opposition imo.
  12. Phil Giles has a PhD in applied maths (from Newcastle). He spent 8 years at Matthew Benham's SmartOdds in quant research (eventually running it), developing some of the formative models in football analytics, before impressing enough to be appointed as Brentford's co-DoF. I think he's better equipped for a data-led approach than anyone, and he's way more interesting than Ashworth.
  13. As of the end of last season, they extracted the greatest value in the Premier League. I am extremely pro-Phil Giles
  14. Each PL goal is worth like 1mil, so I don't think a 10mil delta p/ season over the next 2 is that insane for Man Utd. Plus we need to get and (potentially) extricate a replacement.
  15. Sure. I’ve watched Pardew and Bruce’s interpretations of how not to concede and I liked that much less.
  16. It's not been a disaster, but this level of move in expected goals against is basically unprecedented. (Since the start of December, we have also conceded the most goals in the league.) Something has broken, and these sorts of results will probably continue for a while.
  17. I did not say it was going badly.
  18. We're controlled by KSA. There's nothing to wait and see bro. They will fire everyone if it goes badly for too long.
  19. Of course it is. KSA make the calls, not Darren Eales.
  20. For sure we've got issues, but this and Miley-Longstaff plus whatever Almiron is right now. The players are not that good.
  21. He’s not great but he the attacker has to score a low probability goal. Most of the time that shot doesn’t go in.
  22. How many teams would Longstaff and Miley start for right now? The answer is not great
  23. The Semenyo shot was a tiny % of the accumulative xG we conceded, and one Dubravka should have saved. I don’t like Dan Burn, but he’s a cheap target.
  24. In the US we have Peacock and you can watch on a proxy in the UK (eg NordVPN). They have most games for 4.99 USD p/ month.
