In your case, the players weren't sold a long-term project, they've been sold an opportunity to use the club as a stepping stone - and nothing has changed. Ashley also has no interest in the same way she doesn't and is happy to flog the better players at the prospect of any profit. Both clubs being run into the ground for the benefit of one person.
