I thought he was great when he got up to speed. The year we finished fifth he was brilliant and the second best cb in the league behind Kompany. Classy as fuck on the ball too. There’s a great clip on YouTube of him and Tiote doing a little one-two flick over Rooney’s head. No doubt about it though when he was bad he was really bad. He struggled initially and towards the end of his career here with the physical side of the game. We should have paired him up with someone better and we might have got a bit more out of him, but instead we left him with Mike Williamson in a poor Alan Pardew team.

Love the bloke. Remember feeling completely ashamed and embarrassed by the club especially after that 6-1 defeat to Leyton Orient. Thought we had no chance of promotion and a pretty decent chance at another relegation but he more than steadied the ship. Quite liked the football we played under Hughton particularly after the second half of our championship season and perhaps even more so in the premier league. We weren’t what you might call stylish like an Arsenal or Barca but the team always gave everything it had. That first season back in the premier league more goals were scored at at James’ park than any where else in the league. We had some memorable games. 6-0 revenge against Villa, 5-1 West Ham with a shock Best hat-trick, 5-1 derby win. The 4-4 ofcourse which happened under Pardew but Hughton deserves some credit for that too. Pardew purposely changed as little as possible because he knew what a good job Chris had done and how popular he was.

Hope you’re right. I do think the biggest risk could be that they use this transfer to improve their squad even more. Shame we’re as desperate as we are for a striker. Otherwise we could have done this deal much later in the window and given them less time to find a replacement.

That is really surprising that in this day and age valuations aren’t done on a more scientific basis

Obviously as mentioned we were in for the likes of Varane and Coman but we’re never going to compete against Real and Juve. Apparently we were after Maddison too but the club decided against it.
