They lost Sane to Bayern because he wouldn't sign a new deal.

Leeds 3 - Newcastle 4 We were 3-1 down and Solano scored the winner with the last kick. Kept us top of the league following the 3-1 win at Arsenal mentioned above if I remember correctly.

I've been on the cautious side all season but we're safe now.

Allan Saint-Maximin (now playing for Fenerbahce, on loan from Al-Ahli)
PlymouthGeordie replied to Disco's topic in Football
I thought he was poor tonight but worked much harder for the team. Did brilliantly in the build up to the pen but other than that his decision making and end product was poor. He'll play himself back in to form soon. Just glad he really put a shift in for the boys because that isn't always the case. -
Miguel Almirón (now playing for Atlanta United)

Thought he linked up really well with Bruno and played between the lines really well first half. Second half not so much but there is a player in there. Whether his future I'd with us I'm not sure. Bruce's "style" of football literally nullified every attribute this kid has. -

Look at the style of football used to make him our best player. All 11 behind the ball, give him the ball and see if he can run the length of the pitch. He'd clearly outgrown us pre takeover but that is no longer the case. Our unbeaten run has been built on tactical discipline and work rate. He doesn't contribute on either front. -

He was though. In the sense that if we weren't taken over he'd have definitely left and our sole game plan was give him the ball and hope for the best. He was our entire game plan under Bruce. -

Only one "top" team in the league allows their forward players to "cheat" and that is Man Utd; look at the state of them. City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc all have their forward players put in a real shift. If their forward players can't be carried then ours definitely can't. If ASM either can't or won't press from the front we should sell him. Under Bruce we could carry him because he carried us but that isn't the case anymore. Pre takeover he was probably bigger than the club but that has changed now. Against Brentford we got so much joy when they went down to 10 because we moved the ball quickly. He just refused to do that. Howe has a system and style that works and at the moment ASM is making us worse when he's on the pitch. -
Really poor performance. All we had to do to win that game was score first. Willock was really poor and ASM a disgrace when he came on. He just ran down blind allies and gave the ball away time and again (including for the goal).

I am sick of him lately. So greedy and not prepared to put the hard yards in. -

Just win this, eliminate all possibility of relegation and then we can enjoy the remainder of the season stress free. If Joelinton, Willock and Bruno all start I'll be a lot more confident. -

If he can play I'd risk Joelinton. Win and we are safe. Everton lack athleticism in the middle of the pitch and Joelinton would dominate them in there. We have a big break after the game so he can recover during our trip away. -
Without knowing the rule I would imagine so. He is the referee, he makes all final decisions so nothing stopping him from going to the monitor of his own free will.

Really struggling to switch off from the result yesterday. We pressed aggressively, really limited their chances and also had good chances of our own. As others have said, I can live with the elbow not being a red card. On the penalty incident, I actually blame the ref more than VAR. There is one replay where it is clear the ref can't see what's happened as there are at least 3 players in his line of sight. So for me, he has to be saying to the VAR that he didn't get a good enough look at the incident (evidenced by the fact he gave a corner) and either ask for help or just take his own decision to go and look at the monitor.

Chelsea vs. Newcastle United: 13/03/2022 @ 14:00 (Sky)

If Joelinton is fit to start, I fancy us to get something. He is literally prime Kante these days and was a big miss last night despite the win. -
Southampton 1 - 2 Newcastle United (10/03/2022)
PlymouthGeordie replied to Disco's topic in Football
Superb win. Ryan Fraser is fast becoming one of my favourite players of the last decade. He puts in such a shift. We looked so organised second half and it wasn't until we tired badly in the last 5 minutes we looked vulnerable. To win like that, with Wilson, Joelinton, ASM and Trippier missing is some result. Thought Krafth had a really good second half. -

I think Bruno has been poor and looked off the pace. Agree we are vulnerable down our right hand side though. I think the whole team has looked tired/sluggish compared to recent performances. Still in the game though and could've easily scored right on half time. -
Love this response from Howe when asked about at what points total he can relax at: "When the last ball is kicked this season. There is not time to relax, no matter how many points we get. There is a healthy pressure on us from me and everyone connected to the team to get points and get them quickly". What a refreshing, determined answer. He is so driven.

PlymouthGeordie replied to LRD's topic in Football
I hope not. Far be it from me to question Howe but I've seen managers so many times not change a winning team when matches are in quick succession only to lose the game and say in hindsight they should've freshened things up due to tired legs. I just think this is the ideal time to give Bruno a game as both Shelvey and Willock were out on their feet on Saturday. Same with Fraser, as good as he's been we need to protect him a little. He's literally cramped up in our last 2 games and tired players quite often get muscle injuries. -

ASM unlikely to start going off Howe's pre match quotes. -

In spite of the team being so well balanced and organised of late, I think we should make changes tomorrow in order to keep everyone fresh and prevent injuries. My team would be: Dubravka Manquillo Schar Burn Targett Joelinton Bruno Longstaff ASM Wood Almiron So 5 changes in total. Based on form I'd keep Fraser and Willock in the team but both looked shattered against Brighton and I'd prefer Fraser's work rate against Chelsea. Manquillo and Bruno are upgrades on Krafth and Shelvey. Longstaff in for Willock purely to rest Willock. Miggy is admittedly lucky to get a start but Saints are high energy so he could be useful for this game. For what it's worth I think Howe will only make 2-3 changes at most. -
I don't disagree but I'll always worry about relegation until we're mathematically safe. It's the effect of having been owned by big Mike for so long. Although a win on Thursday would all but do it as we'd surely get a further 5 points from our remaining games.

I think the Athletic confirmed recently that there won't be major surgery on the squad but more like 6-8 departures and up to 5 new arrivals. Based on the above I'd be selling/releasing: Clark, Fede, Dummett, Krafth, Lewis Hayden, Gayle, Murphy, Hendrick. That would leave us with the following squad: GK - Dubravka, Darlow, Gillespie Def - Manquillo, Tripper, Targett (15m option), Schar, Lascelles, Burn Mid - Bruno, Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton, S. Longstaff, Miggy, ASM, Fraser, CF - Wood, Wilson Gives a squad of 19 with Anderson, M. Longstaff and Woodman loaned out. We'd need to bring in the following to get a squad of 25: 1x CB 1x LB 1x CM (Kalvin Phillips) 2x Winger (Sarr, Dwight McNeil, Ekitike) 1x CF Howe has traditionally liked to buy British in the past or players with PL experience. Can see us targeting some of the players above depending on who goes down. Really excited for the summer. Personally I hope we go for younger players with potential rather than superstars approaching 29/30 years old. I know the above squad will still have some dead wood but not realistic to do a complete overhaul in one window.

His post match interview will be about how the game turned when Robinson hit the post and Swansea went up the other end and scored 2 minutes later. He will completely ignore that for the 15 minutes prior to the goal Swansea were dominating the ball and creating chances. -

That is glorious. He has four forwards on the pitch, impossible to have a game plan when your team has no structure or cohesion. Such an awful manager.
