The issue is, if we take the gamble and it doesn't work we get set back further than we would have done if we hadn't finished 4th in the previous season. Not saying the situation would be exactly the same, but look at Everton. It's a (unfair) tightrope we are being forced to walk thanks to a system that's put in place to protect the 'established' top 4/6 clubs. As much as they may try and claim it's there to protect clubs from owners who overspend then dump the clubs, it really isn't. There's plenty of other rules you could implement to protect clubs from that threat.

Even if (numbers wise) he has a similar season to his last couple and is coming up with consistent goals and assists, just playing in and around the top of the table, playing in Europe, being English, all should see his price go up 20m or so if we chose to move him on in a couple years.

Have a feeling Gordon may take Ritchie's 11, and Tonali takes the 8. I know Ritchie is going to be around the squad for another season, but I can't see him having an issue giving up his shirt number considering he isn't going to get many minutes.
