Wasn't at that so cant say. Sounds right though, Stoke were put there for the same reasons for that cup game. Its just reminded me of when they used to dot away fans all over the ground - both corners at the end of the East Stand and in the Milburn Paddock (that Liverpool couldn't sell out but Blackburn, Hull and Charlton did). You'd think that would help the atmosphere but it really didn't.

Was the 1-1 Robert game. Man City had the same allocation the previous round.

Away fans Gallowgate corner Aug93-Jan94 No away fans except cup Jan94-May94 (apart from comps in the bit between the 'benches' and the Leazes end by the bottom entrance beneath the East Stand Away fans East-Stand/Leazes corner Aug94-1999 Then in the Milburn/Leazes corner until the extension was completed.
  4. The other side of the arguement is do you want to just turn up for 6-8 games, knowing you cant progress just for the money or either get it over with or have a better chance of an upset over 2legs and advancing.

They don't/cant sing in tune with that song is the point. Its at a different tempo to either the modern or historic chant. Its like when a singer sings the national anthems, everybody knows where they are with a typical rendition but then everyone's out of sync with the different stylings.

    Dan Burn

Not too dissimilar to Andy Cole's goal against them. Same end, cross from the same side, well directed header in the same corner. Header not in the same league as Burn's but worth a mention I thought

Its not even sung properly in the song they use.

From memory only it started in the 92/93 season. Definitely around from the start of that as its what made me get a copy of the song. Before that the only time I recall anything regular was Alan Price's version of the Blaydon Races in 89/90 and maybe beyond
  9. Just five years to go until the Saudi World Cup cycle begins and he can start grovelling like this to Yassir. Maybe get PSR shifted.
  10. If I had to pick two of the last three games to win and one to lose, I'd have picked these outcomes. Not exempting performances. I'd rather get to the knockouts of this than whatever the objective is in the league now because CL is out by that route.
  11. The format changes ultimately I think takes away the "six pointer" element. You may be but wont know until the end and may very well not be not just getting points for yourself but taking points from a direct opponent with the same objective, you did that right from the start of the group previously. Tonights result could mean nothing to either side in the end but in a group of four at this point it would be pivotal.
  12. We just want a team that wins and plays well in the Premier League and Champions League almost every game despite having financial restrictions every team that can do that doesn't.
  13. Had to win, did, deserved it, still not there though performance wise. Well in the mix to qualify for the knockouts. Something in all the remaining games for us, apart from the last one.
  14. Sad thing is its well documented that Athletic's strips came via Southampton, think right down to the name of the bloke (a student iirc) who sailed there from Southampton, and Southampton don't go on about their real thing than the mackems do their made up thing.
  15. Because they play in the same colours. Like several hundred other teams.
  16. Well then. Bit reminiscent of the 94/95 game actually - they're technically good, better probably but we are more dangerous through other means. Little bit of a Dortmund feel too, just glad its us with the advantage this time given that case.

Yep. Said it on here but I remember being irritated by the atmosphere as far back as 98/99 and talking to a mate about how disappointing it was against Man United that season. Its far from a new or localised thing, its up there with observing Christmas has become commercial. Think a big part of it is every fanbase both expanding and being watered down starting with the Premier League and all-seater stadium by the sort of people that could have but weren't going before and people too young to have come up in the football fan culture of the last century. E.g. almost every one that was at the Portsmouth game in 92 was a passionate supporter, now it won't even be half the crowd. There's just so many reasons for it that are never going to countered.
  18. Didn't help against PSV. Though it was one of the worst games of football ever inflicted, even with Des Hamilton starting.
  19. The first mild midweek game I ever went to there were pitch invasions, scarf and shirt burnings in the gallowgate end and relegation was confirmed..... sigh! happy days
  20. It Dos sound like Hopkinson will be a keyboard member.
  21. Thing is, would anybody even notice a performance like that under Bruce? It was standard fare, so I'm not even sure the point on Bruce getting slaughtered stands up As for Howe, he gets slaughtered on here after every defeat no matter how many times he turns things around or how much collateral he has in store I get the point, it just doesn't stand to reason on any level
  22. Prem season was never written in. We've punched above our permitted weight to qualify for the CL twice, improving on that in PSR times was based on fantasy.
  23. Said after one game we weren't impressive and I couldn't see as going anywhere and reiterated the only enjoyment I forseen this season was in the cups. "what a downbeat assessment" and "get a striker and we are gonna be formiddable" I was told. 6 people liked that post. after 3months and one good league performance and mediocre results since that my assessment wasn't downbeat enough if anything, but generally nothing about this season has surprised me.
