Just to use an extreme example to demonstrate, lets say you bench prime Messi for some wild reason, and he wins the game coming on from the bench because he's the best player out there. This doesn't prove that benching him and subbing him on in the second half is a winning strategy, as the win would probably have been comfortable with him starting. Not saying anything was right or wrong last game, just commenting on the idea that us winning somehow proves that starting Tonali on the bench was right.

I think it's a very real possibility, even if we have several targets. That's why most clubs doesn't buy in january. I don't think it would be an excuse though, the real mistake was to seemingly not have enough targets in the summer. I can understand not wanting to waste money by overpaying in january.
