Skirge
Trouble is Sam Oba knows that Owen will be back in his own boots the second he is fit again, even if Oba is banging goals in while Owen is out. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2007/09/27/oba-can-fill-owen-s-boots-72703-19855822/ Oba can fill Owen’s boots Sep 27 2007 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle Oba Martins SAM ALLARDYCE is backing Obafemi Martins to get back on the goals trail, starting with Newcastle United’s game at Manchester City on Saturday. The little Nigerian striker will be thrust back into the limelight again with Michael Owen currently in Germany for surgery to his injury problems. In his only interview after the Carling Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal on Tuesday night, Martins told the Chronicle how he blamed himself for the chances he missed at the Emirates Stadium. But Big Sam, who knows a thing or two about man-management, has been quick to jump to the defence of his striker. The United boss told me today: “Obviously what happened at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night was disappointing. “Oba was disappointed and I was disappointed for him, but chances come and go and strikers score some and miss some, and at least he was there to miss them. “But what Oba cannot do is let this get him down. I told him he did great getting the ball past the keeper at Arsenal just after they scored, but then he didn’t hit it hard enough and the defender got his shot off the line. “It was a shame because for the next couple of days he is going to think it was all his fault. “But he cannot do that. This is a team game and we are all in this together. He knows that as a front man if he scores then he gets all the headlines and that if he doesn’t score he gets different type of headlines. “He will know that he could have had the right sort of headlines after Arsenal but what is really pleasing is that he is looking really sharp and really, really quick. “At Arsenal we didn’t get as much service to Oba as we would have liked and if we had he would have caused them a lot more trouble.” This has been a difficult time for Martins. He will have been told by his agents at the Stellar Group that United were prepared to sell him in the close season and that there were no takers. Since then, despite his 17 goals last season, Martins found that Owen has been in front of him in the pecking order in Allardyce’s preferred big-man, little-man formation up front, and Tuesday was his first start since the game at Middlesbrough on August 26. But to his credit, and with the backing of the United supporters, Martins has kept his head up, especially when he has been thrust on as a substitute, scoring in these circumstances against Barnsley in the Carling Cup and then making the winner for Owen against Wigan Athletic. Mark Viduka looks set to return to the side on Saturday, after missing out at the Emirates because of a foot injury. And Martins will be looking to renew his partnership at the City at Manchester Stadium with the burly Aussie which looked so good in United’s only away win to date at Bolton on the opening day of the season. :: Chief operating officer Russell Cushing and accountant Ken Slater, who have 60 years of experience working at St James’ Park, will leave the club today. Jaehyun
Trouble is Sam Oba knows that Owen will be back in his own boots the second he is fit again, even if Oba is banging goals in while Owen is out. I'd rather have Martins over Owen, disgraceful how Owen gets an automatic start when he's fit. Oba can fill owen's boots? F**k off, other way around. But at last a close-to decent article by Anal. Whether or not it was just pure speculation/paper talk is another matter.
Kimbo
Are we sure Oba can play in the goal hanger position?
Guest eyeball_tickler
like i said in another thread, if martins can improve his finishing, aerial ability, control, passing, movement and occasionally show us how quick he is, he'd be a great replacement for owen. Guest jamesmartinsmith
If we play 4-4-2 with Oba and Viduka, Milner and Zoggy on the wings and Emre and Geremi in the centre, I think we can start to move back up the table.

Cajun
With a game in hand (so if we won that we would be second). I hate the way we are really struggling with Allardyce!
Toon_Crazy
I'd rather have Martins here than Owen, Martins is younger (arguably)... He is fitter, faster, less composed but he will improve with age and appearances.. He is likely to be linked with moves away if he is a regular starter and happy here. Kev
Martins creates much more than Owen, chases more down and will never stop running but owen just walks around then jogs when the balls around him... Martins will be excellent when he can finish more of his chances
Guest Synthespian
I've watched them both be a bit lazy. Owen is the better finisher. Martins is the better striker of a ball.

Guest Micktoon
A fit Owen compared to a fit Martins is a total no brainer. Owen everytime for me. Martins is a scorer of spectacular goals, Owen is a goalscorer.
