I don't really understand why someone earning that much would be on PAYE.  Doesn't make sense to me.

Sure.  I'd have thought he'd be a contractor, with his own accountants, as opposed to PAYE - which hardly seems like the most tax-efficient way to earn that sort of money.

Sure.  I'd have thought he'd be a contractor, with his own accountants, as opposed to PAYE - which hardly seems like the most tax-efficient way to earn that sort of money.

 

Maybe it's down to regulations that require him to be an employee of the football club.

As far as HMRC are concerned he is an employee, no matter if he wanted to call himself a contractor or employee

He doesn't get a choice

 

Works out worse for Liverpool in employee contributions too, so must be regulatory.
