And that Everton game where we beat them 6-2. Counter-attacking football at it's sublime best. That goal where Lua Lua and Bernard linked up all the way down the left-wing, practically from our own box (think it was the sixth, can't remember). Just brilliant, brilliant play.

I loved and hated the bastard as much as anyone. On his day he was absolutely unstoppable. Even on a bad day, he could turn a game with a free kick or corner. Don't think there's ever been a free-kick taker like him in the PL.

Everyone does I think! They were great videos. If it were still permissable, the only players you could really make a video for now would be Oba and Shay [and Zog, in time].

 

On point though, I think he's probably one of my favourite players ever. He epitomised Newcastle [in the time I've known the club]. Enigmatic, talented, over-flowing with often unused potential, but with a pathos that makes him truly entertaining.

 

Would swap a yesteryear Robert, who produces 5 seconds of brilliance [split into two 2.5 second bursts that result in two goals], for any number of grafters who exert their talentless bodies for seven games straight without rousing any reaction from the SJP faithful. Don't think we'll push on to the heights that people expect[/demand] without someone with similar creative abilities on the right wing.

As you say Ankdh, a video of Shay Given would be great and at the time of the blanket ban which was one day after I posted my last Shearer video I actually had a Shay Given one 95% made to the tune of Ian Browns F.E.A.R, a song I thought fit superbly with alot of slow motion Given saves.

Just watched that vid, brought a tear to my eye, cant believe how good he actually was and how good we were. Some amazing goals he scored for us, in fact i bet he scored more spectacular goals for us than any other nufc player in recent history, those 2 against tottenham were of the highest order, its a shame he went because its sort of marked the beginning of the end for us. i wish we brought some real exciting flair back into the side, as it stands we only have Zog.

 

i know am admitting the cardinal sin of all football beliefs but i would  honestly prefer an exillarating 4-3 win than an efficient 1-0 win. That sounds stupidly obvious but footballing wise its a terrible 'ambition'

He owes a lot to Sir Bobby, who spotted that Robert had something special that would complement Shearer, and turn a blind eye to all that was bad about him - all of course a benefit to both club and player.

 

And so so it was Robert's fault that SBR's successor - ie. Souness - couldn't accept the fact that the player in question didn't have the Neville brothers' defensive physical presence and therefore marked him as rubbish and a player 'who had to be sold'. Dunn's exit from Blackburn followed a similar path initially when Souness used to badger on about "Dunn not doing enough defensively". It was either season 01/02 or 02/03 when Dunn sunk us with a 2nd half winner at Ewood, which complimented a MOM performance. Souness' post-match press conference mirrored his Heereenveen/Robert one ie. "he played well, but doesn't do nearly enough in other areas". When you look back on your career, do you think you made any bad career decisions?

Yes, absolutely. Most notably leaving Newcastle for Portsmouth. I would have been better off staying at Newcastle, it's a huge club. Also, there were certain managers in my career who said one thing to me, and did something else.

How often have players left Newcastle and regretted it later (but rarely trumpet it in the press) ?

I firmly believe its the media who encourage them.

Ironically, Robert produced his best spell of consistent form in his Toon career (for me) under Souness during that run of winning games before the Lisbon fall-out, where he once again let his big gob go, which was the end for him and rightly so in my opinion. I will remember him with fondness though, but tinted as a player who could have been one of the best left wide men in the world given his talent, he was that good on his day.

 

Btw is Martins the new Robert? I think he's a similar frustrating player.
