Manchester United football players found themselves at the centre of an unfolding sex scandal today after a woman claimed she was raped at the hotel where the team was holding its Christmas party.

The police received a 999 call from a 26 year-old woman at Manchester's Great John Street Hotel early this morning. She claimed she had been the victim of a sex attack.

Manchester United had hired out the entire 30-room five-star hotel for a private Christmas party, which was attended by around 150 guests.

The hotel was closed today while police officers from the Greater Manchester Police began an inquiry into the alleged incident.

A spokesperson for the hotel said: "I can't confirm anything. I can only say that we are helping the police with their inquiries."

A police spokesperson said: “Police are currently investigating a report of rape at a hotel in Manchester city centre.

“At about 4.15am on Tuesday December 18, 2007, police were called to the hotel on Great John Street to a report that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

“Inquiries are continuing.”

The Manchester Evening News diary column reported that "the entire first team", apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, went to the Manchester 235 Casino around lunchtime yesterday, where they were joined by two drag queens and five burlesque dancers.

They then moved on to Old Grapes, a Manchester pub owned by Coronation Street actor Liz Dawn, before heading to Great John Street Hotel in the evening.

There has been no immediate comment from Manchester United.

Hmm, might be best to not put any libellous allegations on the forum, thanks.

Although I'd wager Ronaldo was there, as one of those in drag.

Libellous?

What a terrible claim to make.

I can see the headlines now:

"Manchester United Football Club employee at official Manchester United Football Club Party SHOCKER!!!!!!"

Must be said, Man U have a large number of players that you just know are absolute dickheads.

Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and Rio Ferdinand in particular just stand out as people that I reckon I'd absolutely hate to have any sort of conversation with.

Can't say I've met them tbh and public persona and reality are very different things. Personally I find the insincerity of the badge kissing Frank Lampard on the pitch galling, he might be ok though. Who knows.

I never ever believe these stories, even if it isn't anything to do with us, it always turns out to be utter shite.

Or the accused have the fnacial muscle to sweep it under the carpet.

Or being accused because they've got financial resources.

There is no doubt some of these cases get paid off, but i bet more innocent than guilty have paid of for the sake of their reputation being dragged through the mud.

Let him be he has nothing better to do than police an internet forum

I would have thought that when you pay to keep a forum running you'd be allowed to ensure that it doesn't get shut down due to stupidity. But hey, maybe that's just me.

Most rapes go unreported and of the ones that are reported only 6% end in a criminal conviction, so it's not surprising most of these cases never go to court. That doesn't mean there is no truth behind any of them.

Professional sportsmen live in a world where they've been the centre of attention their whole lives, it's a breading ground for narcissism and they're not used to women saying no. I think it's fairly likely that there are fare few professional sportsmen in Britain that have been involved in rape and got away with it either because the woman doesn't want her reputation dragging through the mud or because there's not much chance of gaining a conviction against top barristers.

And 'paying off' would be classed as perverting the course of justice. It would be much easier to prove than a rape and it could land the payer in jail, just ask Amy Winehouse and her hubby.

That's "what's known as a request" is it? I have no problem with being reminded about avoiding libel, only with the sarcastic condescending tone, especially one that implies there has already been some kind of libel. Given that only I had posted, I took it as aimed at me. No need for it.

I really think Dave just meant it as a general comment to all, mate. He could hardly be accusing you of anything given that you copy and pasted from the Times.

Fucking hell.

I put it in before anyone could make any claims that could get us in trouble. Sorry if you thought it was aimed at you. I thought it was pretty obvious it wasn't...
