garth
I'll believe it, if and when he signs on the dotted line and is paraded in a press conference, so until then it's just press talk.
STM
Stereotypical positive signs; When a player visits the city CHECK When a player visits the training ground CHECK When the country of origin is reporting it alot CHECK When a player has been advised by ex players to join us CHECK When it's been reported that we have agreed a fee and the clubs stayed quiet about it CHECK What we need now is the one of the parties to make a comment. Ikon
I've probably said it hundred times so far as a Newcastle fan, I think we have a bright future to look forward to under Keegan. Even if we dont get Modric, but i really really hope we do. Im quite sure that we wont have to suffer as much as we have done since Bobby left. Cant wait to see which players we will sign and next season and everything. Have they released the fixtures for next season yet? No, on a serious note im gonna go to the first home game next season, for sure..cant wait...

A source in England has confirmed that Modric was also in Newcastle along with Mamic brothers. After having lunch in a luxury Malmaison hotel, three of them plus Peter Harrison proceeded to St. James's Park, where they had met with Tony Jimenez and Dennis Wise. But after hearing what Newcastle offered, elder Mamic broke off the negotiations and returned with his brother and Modric to Zagreb early in the evening. Apparently, according to the source, Mamic wasn't particularly happy with the offer that was presented.
Dave
Surely if we've gone to all this effort to get the player over here etc, we won't pull out over wages?
Disco
Definitely a positive sign even being linked so heavily/meeting with a player such as Modric as shows that the club seems to identifying the right kind of player: good on the ball, flexible, decent turn of pace and strengthening in areas where we need strengthening while at the same time sending out a message to our rivals that we mean business next season. Doing it before the Euros as well (if it goes through) will send out a message to those playing in the Euros that we are looking to go places next season and may well get us a chance at getting players we otherwise wouldn't have been able to. Colocho
The Telegraph today: Newcastle on verge of signing Luka Modric By Rob Stewart Last Updated: 1:42am BST 24/04/2008 Newcastle are close to buying highly-rated Croatia midfielder Luka Modric in a £12 million deal with Dinamo Zagreb. Dinamo vice-president Zdravko Mamic met Newcastle representatives at the city's Malmaison hotel this week for talks over the playmaker who will be a key member of Slaven Bilic's Croatia side at Euro 2008. advertisement It is understood the deal has been spearheaded by Newcastle's director of football, Dennis Wise, and should Modric, 22, sign it would represent a significant coup as he has attracted the attention of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. Mamic, who oversaw Eduardo da Silva's move to Arsenal, has informally confirmed that Modric is near to finalising a move to Newcastle, where manager Kevin Keegan is short of midfield creativity. There were suggestions last night that Modric was already celebrating a money-spinning move, although it is doubtful that he would earn the £80,000 a week being paid to Dinamo old boy Mark Viduka. Modric had also been linked with Barcelona, but his compatriot, Portsmouth's Niko Kranjcar, recommended that he move to the Premier League. Modric underlined his potential during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and was instrumental in the 3-2 defeat of England at Wembley in November that alerted clubs across Europe to his talent. Modric's arrival would hasten the departure of Turkey international Emre, but England Under-21 captain Steven Taylor is to be offered a new deal. "Taylor is a young and promising defender," Newcastle chairman Chris Mort said. "We would like him to stay at Newcastle long term. We will sit down with Steven and his father, and hopefully work something out." Luka Modric factfile Born: Zadar, Yugoslavia on Sept 9, 1985 Club: Dinamo Zagreb Position: Left midfield Claim to fame: Played in the Croatia team who won 3-2 at Wembley to end Steve McClaren's reign as England coach Linked with: Newcastle, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona …

Guest alijmitchell
Over-rated shite anyway. 12m for Modric? Never heard of him. Must be shite. We don't need him. I'd Rather Have Bullard.
Parsley
Wages shouldn't be a stumbling block with our financial backing imo. If Modric simply doesn't want to come then fair enough but offering £10-20 mill for him and then not giving him a sufficient wage just sounds stupid.
