Kev’s praise a boost for Zog

Jan 25 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

CHARLES N’ZOGBIA goes in against Arsenal in tomorrow’s fourth round FA Cup tie looking for his first domestic cup goal for Newcastle United boosted by a glowing accolade from his new boss Kevin Keegan.

It hasn’t taken Keegan long to realise that he could have a little gem on his hands in the 21-year-old French midfielder.

And the United boss is banking on N’Zogbia sparkling against an Arsenal side managed by Arsene Wenger who is also a big fan.

Indeed, from what Keegan has seen of N’Zogbia – and his attacking team-mates Damien Duff, James Milner and Emre – since he took charge, he is confident that Newcastle have enough creativity to trouble any of the Premier League’s top four – and that includes Arsenal.

Before leaving for the first of United’s two trips to The Emirates in the space of four days, Keegan told me today: “I like Charles very much – he’s a player who never stops trying to do things.

“He’s a player the opposition don’t want to play against as he challenges you, comes at you and tries to take you on.

“You’ve got to have players who can pass the ball well, but if you haven’t got players who can go past an opponent and open teams you, then you’ve got a problem.

“I think we have got those players in N’Zogbia, Damien Duff and James Milner. Those three, and Emre when he’s not suspended, can open things up.”

Keegan will be expecting United to open up Arsenal tomorrow more than they did against Bolton Wanderers in last Saturday’s disappointing goalless draw at St James’s Park.

But KK believes this had a lot to do with playing 60 minutes with just 10 men in their cup replay against Stoke three days earlier.

And Keegan believes N’Zogbia suffered more than most given the amount of running he did in the 4-1 replay over the men from the Potteries.

Keegan added: “I think N’Zogbia certainly didn’t have the energy levels he had the other night.

“You’ve got to remember he was playing Premiership players, and not Championship players.”

“We’re not devoid of invention, but we were robbed of it because of different reasons, not least tiredness from playing with 10 men for 60 minutes against Stoke.”

Was worried about Zoggy's future under Allardyce (despite the new contract), still think he's got major, major potential.

Keegan will have him playing better than ever, I cannot wait to see him next season, Taylor did an interview on world and was on about the more intense training they are doing now, much more passing instead of the long ball game they trained for over the last few months.

That kind of long ball game really makes players like Zoggy suffer, as does playing him at left back.

I hope Zog doesn't do a Dyer and believe all his hype.

Although they are slightly different players, Zog is about as good as Dyer was at the same age. He has a lot to do to become the top player we think he can become.

Keegan 'bigs' all his players up tbf, that's his style of management and the way he motivates players.

That's understandable, but out of all the current players on the roster, I think this is the one you won't find much disagreement with.

How far away from the National team is Zoggy? France seems to have a few good players playing in the same position as him. That might be enough motivation to continue growing.

Zoogy does not have half the ego Dyer had, Charles will never be that kind of player. He has had plenty hype already to get over excited about and he has'nt, nothing appears to cheers him up, dunno if he is that miserable or just really really shy.

One thing for sure though he will keep his feet on the ground and just play his game..

Stick him at left back tbh, it'll give him more space to work in!!

It'll be interesting to see who ends up as first choice on the left wing. Duff can play right side, but he's not really as good there as his final ball is a bit wank, so he's not really a big threat to cut inside. Better on the left where he can get at the full-back and to the byline.

So it should be one or the other, eventually, and I know who I'd want.

Good to hear positive things about Emre, another who may really benefit from a team who actually try and play a bit of football.

It seems that plenty of people are believing the hype around N'zogbia already. He has a long way to go before being compared to Dyer who, on his day, could turn a game. Those days weren't often I know, but N'Zogbia has to stop disappearing from games if he wants to be rated. At this time he still only shows glimpses of how good he could be and that isn't enopugh to call him a good player. No consistency at all.

Roster.

Hey, fuck you! I didn't even notice I put that. So what does the Queen call it then? The... squad.

Fuck, I can't think of anything stereotypical to add. You get this round/wicket.

Squad...knew it, didn't type it.

Roster.

Only a matter of time before N'Zogbia is the NO.1 left wideout on the depth chart tbh.

Exactly, we're slightly more than a week away from the Super Bowl. The hype is setting into my subconscious.

He'll have to add consistency to his game in order to be comparable to Dyer?

Dyer was a better player than a lot give him credit for, but he had about 1 really good game a year and was generally dreadful the rest of them. So he played well once in every, say, 8 games. Hardly any more productive than N'Zogbia on average.

Gonna be the worst superbowl ever.

I am sure once he is played in the same role CM,or Lw for a good few games under KK, we will see a mass improvement in his game to many of our past managers have messed him about. I did hear that Zoggy prefers CM to the wing though, I cannot see him keeping that role but I do think he can and should keep Duff out of the team.

The bits about N'Zogbia are spot on but the bits about Dyer don't even make sense. Dyer was totally inconsistent too. You even mention that.

It'll be doing well to be worse than Seattle vs Pittsburgh tbf, absolutely rubbish game.
