ATALANTA have called for a tightening of the rules on the transfer of young players as they reflect bitterly on Newcastle’s swoop for striking starlet Fabio Zamblera.

The Italian club’s youth academy boss Mino Favini admits that he is “demoralised” by the departure of his star pupil.

The 17-year-old Zamblera only made his move to Tyneside after United agreed a fee for him.

But Favini insists Atalanta had no choice but to strike a deal because the youngster’s heart was set on a switch to the Premier League – and the riches on offer here.

“I don’t like having to comment on this because we have been powerless to prevent it happening,” said Favini.

“I feel demoralised by the actions of these foreign clubs who come here and harvest our crop of young players.

“I’m convinced that rules exist that could be applied to prevent this from happening.

“But at the moment, unfortunately, young players are being attracted by the God of money.”

Yet Mino Favini  boss accepts its what makes the world go round

For a club like Atalanta, working with young players is a necessity," said director of sport Carlo Osti. "We have to develop youngsters and sell them to finance the youth system and thankfully we don't have the same pressure to win things like bigger clubs."
