Gazza detained under mental health act

It may not be that daft an idea. There is nothing Gazza couldn't teach a kid in regards to demonstration, a big process of coaching kids. Where as role model wise, what better person to preach to kids how not to live your life and waste what you have. But what kids really need is someone who can relate to them and their football which is all about fun, freedom of expression and individualism, not to mention passion and enthusiasm. I think on that level Gazza would be great with kids. I've seen all kinds of coaching, and let me tell you kids don't need half the things they are subjected to, especially in professional academies. The best coaches are the ones who are big kids themselves, who have huge amounts of enthusiasm and passion for the game, coaches who let kids be kids. The only problem would be communication, the single most important factor between coach and kid. Could Gazza communicate to a kid? I think so. Gazza would be perfect. Academy kids would love him.

Look man, get real. He's in a mental institution. It's a big leap from that situation to teaching other people's kids about anything. Local solidarity has it's limits.

Obviously when he is fully recovered, if he does indeed fully recover. I have my doubts personally. If not at Newcastle he could perhaps follow Beckham's lead and set up a football programme for kids here in Newcastle or in Gateshead.

This is probably a daft idea but with KK offering to help out with Gazza i wonder if the Toon would allow Gazza to help out with the youngsters at training but i know with him being daft as a brush he might have a disruptive influence or it could help sort him out and they will have a laugh with him .

Why do we want someone with serious mental health worries working at NUFC? In what way do NUFC have to be an integral part of his recovery?

I fail to understand why folk put this option forward.  Shouldn't it be Spurs who help his recuperation - after all there money was more important than ours.

HE IS A GEORDIE NOT A FUCKING COCKNEY THATS WHY.

He showed no loyalty to his local club when Spurs came for him. So you worry about his 'Geordie' status all you want - I wish him well for his own sake but fuck him ever coming to NUFC.

I wish I was old enough to remember watching him at Italia '90. I've seen some youtube clips, and heard the way people talk about him and I feel like I missed out...

You did. Oh, you did.

Gazza in hospital after 'suicide bid' in the bathtub of his London hotel

Last updated at 19:52pm on 05.05.08

Paul Gascoigne was back in hospital last night after asking staff to give him a steak knife and then trying to drown himself in the bathtub of his hotel room.

The troubled former England football star was being assessed by doctors after going "hysterical" at a top London hotel, it has been reported.

Police were called to the four-star Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge yesterday afternoon after staff became concerned about his condition.

Staff feared that Gazza, who had just shaved his head, had planned to slash his wrists in his room, according to The Sun.

Red head: Flame-haired Gazza looks nonchalant about his shocking new style over the weekend

The 40-year-old alcoholic had been drinking heavily and was behaving unpredictably.

He had alarmed hotel staff when he reportedly cancelled his order for a steak and asked them to simply bring him the knife.

The hotel staff guessed he was planning to use the knife to harm himself, sources said.

They then quickly called police to Gazza's room, where he was reportedly holding his own head under the water of the bathtub in an attempt to drown himself.

The two police and the hotel security guards were unable to deal with Gascoigne, and six more officers were called.

He was hauled to safety and escorted off the premises after agreeing to be taken to hospital.

A source at the hotel said: "One of my colleagues said it was like he was out of his head. Two policemen arrived but they couldn't handle him so they had to call for back-up and six more came along.

"There were police everywhere and I couldn't believe this was all just for one man.

"From what I gather his behaviour was unpredictable and the back-up was just to be on the safe side."

The source added that Gascoigne had been staying at the hotel.

The Kensington hair salon's manager had to help the troubled star cross the road

The drama comes two months after Gascoigne was freed from a psychiatric hospital after being detained for two weeks under the Mental Health Act.

He was held in February after Northumbria Police were called to the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

It followed an incident at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle hours earlier, where the hotel said the star made other guests and staff feel "threatened".

Gascoigne had spent 12 nights at the £200-a-night Malmaison recuperating after a hip operation.

Staff said the 40-year-old, who won 57 caps for England, had behaved in a bizarre manner during his stay.

One said: "He's always out of it, he's off his head on drink.

"He's obviously not well."

Regarded as one of England's most talented footballers, Gascoigne had spells at Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers.

However, he made the headlines more for his alcoholism and off-field behaviour.

In his autobiography, Gazza: My Story, he admitted headbutting his wife Sheryl and throwing her to the floor during an argument in 1996, breaking her finger.

After a series of highly publicised binges in 1998, Gascoigne was admitted to a private clinic to tackle the alcohol addiction.

Last May, a day after celebrating his 40th birthday with family and friends in Gateshead, Gascoigne had emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.

Last week he was again seen behaving in an odd manner as he walked through Mayfair.

His hair ruffled and his designer sunglasses resting in a haphazard manner on his face, witnesses said he looked a sorry sight and was clearly the worse for wear.

The fallen star shuffled around the streets seemingly oblivious to the traffic. An onlooker said: "He looked as if he didn't know what day it was."

Scotland Yard confirmed police were called to a hotel in Knightsbridge at 3.15pm yesterday following reports of a "man causing concern".

It added that the man agreed to go voluntarily to hospital to be assessed.

BROKEN Paul Gascoigne was seen begging in the street hours before his desperate hotel suicide bid, The Sun can reveal.

The soccer legend, who was last night in a mental health unit after trying to drown himself in a bath, also tried to put down a £20,000 deposit on a Ferrari.

But the episode dissolved into farce after his trousers fell down in the showroom – revealing he was wearing no underwear.

Former England star Gazza, 40, was seen begging outside a shop by millionaire Queens Park Rangers chairman Gianni Paladini.

Shocked Mr Paladini handed him £70 and urged him to clean up his act before making his way to QPR’s Loftus Road stadium for Sunday’s match with West Brom.

Alcoholic Gazza, diagnosed with manic depression, began asking passers-by for cash after a store refused his credit card as he tried to buy fags in London’s Mayfair.

A spokesman for Mr Paladini said: “Gianni recognised Paul and saw he was in a bad way.

“He was drunk, smelled of booze and was upset.

“Gianni was shocked. He gave him some money and told him to have a meal and clean himself up. He then put him in a cab and sent him on his way.

“When Gianni heard he’d tried to commit suicide, he was very upset.”

The taxi took Gazza to the posh Millennium Hotel in Sloane Street, Knightsbridge.

The Sun told yesterday how the sad former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder was rescued by cops there as he held his head underwater in the bath.

Staff had called officers after he asked them for a steak knife, sparking fears for his safety.

He was taken to the mental health unit of Chelsea and Westminster hospital, where yesterday he was still recovering.

Geordie Gazza also had his hair dyed red then shaved it all off during a bank holiday weekend bender in the capital.

Onlookers told how he visited a Ferrari showroom in South Kensington on Saturday to “buy” a £140,000 car.

Chauffeur Gerard Lowe said: “He was wasted and abusive, talking about how footballers are paid so much.

“I felt sorry for him. At one point his trousers fell down and he wasn’t wearing underwear.”

Paul Gascoigne missed an Iron Maiden gig because he passed out after consuming too much alcohol, a report claims.

The football legend has joined the rockers on tour after walking out on his partner Sheryl last week.

According to the Daily Star, Gazza had been due to watch backstage as his favourite band performed at the Sziget Festival in Budapest, but slept through the gig after getting drunk on the group's private jet.

"He was in a shocking state, no condition to go to the gig," a source told the newspaper. "As soon as he got to the hotel he passed out in his room - and that was it. He slept through the whole lot. He was due to be backstage for the gig but a decision was taken to let him get his head together. One of the crew agreed to stay behind to make sure he was okay.

"The band may come across as hellraising rockers but they are professional and great blokes. They are worried about their mate and want him to be alright."

Gazza was discharged from rehab last month after receiving treatment for alcoholism. Ex-wife Sheryl then vowed to give their relationship another try - as long as he could stay sober.

Bit harsh - he hasn't done much harm except to himself but I think he's not long for this world

Yeah it is i suppose, just sick of him throwing away his 'last' chances, making a tit of himself and moving even further away from the footballer we all loved.

Its not just effecting him though, his family are having to deal with him as well, its tough for them.

So you think his family will be pleased if he dies?

Meanwhile, the Sziget festival is a ridiculous place to go if you're trying to stay sober. It would put you in a minority of, like, one.

In a way yes.

You have to remember gazza is as thick as pig shit. He just happened to be able to play football. Until he actually understands the situation he's in he'll never improve.
