Milner to Liverpool?

Fair enough. I was at West Ham and I think his legs alone would have meant him having a field day. Geremi just couldn't run.

In his defence, he's young and like Owen, its not possible to know for certain what a player might be like in a different position until he plays there.

Looks like we should keep Duff then.

I know it is just stats, but when a winger can't get in a decent cross or shot, you expect him to keep the ball, either by playing a sensible pass, or by taking the ball down the byline to force a set piece. Giving the ball away one in three is not what we need.

You should be looking for your target striker to retain the ball as much as possible as well. Therefore Smith is better than Viduka. Face it, those stats alone mean fuck all.

No idea what counts and what doesn't Dave. I'd imagine Smith's average is bumped up by a prolonged spell in midfield Mowen.

As for Duff, I don't think he's a bad player. I think there is some mental or physical thing going on that we are more likely to be able to sort out than Milner's lack of consistent ability.

Creating players try creating and more often fail, if they don't then they really are amazing players like Scholes etc...and is why defenders will also have high passing as they pass between themselves and do not take risks.

Truly truly pointless stats those, the fact you don't know what they consider and what they don't really does take the biscuit when presenting them to criticise a player, at least do it properly.

OK, why not compare him to other Premier League right wingers at teams we want to be challenging:

Bentley 76%

Osman 76%

Pienaar 78.5%

Ireland 74%

Utaka 79%

Lennon 81%

Milner 66%

Our other midfielders are comparable to their equivalent players at these clubs, but Milner drops well short of both his team mates and his rivals.

whats the deal with the stats.. we've all seen Milner a lot and he always plays the same way.. head down, right, left, right, whip it in somewhere in the box..

no need for statistics to confirm what we've seen every other week

Christ, even Aaron Lennon has a higher pass rate than Milner.

That could be because Lennon spends most of his time running into blind alleys and losing possession whereas Milner is more likely to try to whip the cross in?

Obviously, that's a massive simplification but the point is valid.

Statistics are misleading. I saw one last year that said statistically Nigel Reo-Coker was one of the best passers in the league, whereas I and most of the 40,000 odd people sat around me could tell you that most of the time, he couldn't pass wind.

Don't forget that for much of the season, Milner was on the left wing of a lopsided 4-3-3, and his job was obviously to whip in crosses from outside the edge of the area with his right foot. With our strikers, those are easy to defend against, but it was obviously central to our tactics.

Do we have stats for Milner under Allardyce vs under Keegan?
