Blackburn have informed Alan Shearer and Sam Allardyce that they are in the running to replace Mark Hughes as the Rovers chairman John Williams attempts to fill the vacant manager's position within a week.

Shearer, a title winner with the club and the choice of many supporters, and the former Bolton manager Allardyce are among the candidates contacted since the board finalised its shortlist on Monday. Though both are understood to be out of the country, Shearer as a BBC pundit at Euro 2008 and Allardyce on holiday, Williams hopes to speak to the pair about the possibility of succeeding Hughes.

Shearer is strongly favoured to make his first step into management at Ewood Park, with the former coach Tony Parkes among those championing his cause, though he and Allardyce are not the only options. The MK Dons manager Paul Ince is also under consideration while Steve McClaren, Henk ten Cate, despite being in negotiations with Panathinaikos, Dick Advocaat and the former Rovers' defender Henning Berg, now coach of Lyn Oslo, have all been discussed at boardroom level.

"The work we've put in has resulted in a shortlist of very exciting candidates," Williams said. "It's important after Graeme Souness and Mark Hughes that we now make it three successful appointments in a row. "

He got them promoted, but soured after that.  Probably good on the whole, but nothing great.  Loads of managers get clubs promoted, then fail.

And won the league cup !!

Thought this would be ideal for him. He is either very confident in his ability to manage a 'big' club with little experience or simply dosnt want another job other than the NUFC job.

He thought far more about being KKs number 2.

He's got to be careful, there aren't too many examples in England of a top pro coming back to manage a big club, after taking a break away from the game with no experience. KK is an exception of course, but even then we were a low 2nd division club at the time.

tbh a little bit disappointed in shearer, you have to question either his ambition/desire to actually be a manager, or his arrogance thinking he can come in and manage NUFC without getting experience elsewhere.

Or whether or not he's been guaranteed the Newcastle job when Keegan finishes.

I doubt he's been guaranteed it, but you couldn't blame him for sniffing an opportunity if it becomes available sooner than expected.

Me mum turned to me after he spoke about it on MOTD, and said "he's got a plan..." and even though she doesn't know her arse from her elbow when it comes to football, she sounded about right tbh.

Stupid. Blackburn would have been rocking almost as much as Newcastle if he had gone back and he would only have needed to do a 'good' job to be one of the candidates when KK leaves.
