Guest
Thought his set-pieces on the whole were impressive. At least 50% were in the danger area which is all you can ask for.

LoveItIfWeBeatU
He has to start because he's the only player in the squad who can take a decent corner (that failing must be addressed in the Summer by signing someone else who can take them too). Dave
It's fucking pathetic how impressed we are by his set pieces. Not a slight on him, but just the fact that we're so used to utterly shite deliveries. In the position we're in, we should be trying to make the most of set pieces and yet last night was the first time in fucking ages we were actually able to use them to put a team under pressure. Dismal.

The movement was much improved too, for the first time in a while when we were awarded a free kick or a corner I felt that we could make something of it. Kevin Nolan's dummy for the equaliser was either a great piece of play by him, or a very well crafted training ground move, either way it was brilliant. Dismal. One of the reasons we are where we are. No free kick specialist, Guthrie the only one who can take a decent corner, no creative midfielders, etc. You know, the same problems we've had since Robert, Shearer and Solano left. Guest Stephen927
It's f***ing pathetic how impressed we are by his set pieces. No free kick specialist, Guthrie the only one who can take a decent corner, no creative midfielders, etc. You know, the same problems we've had since Robert, Shearer and Solano left. The thing with Robert is he would try and find that perfect spot to place a corner in, and sometimes it used to take him a couple of tries and he'd hit the first man, but when he got it right it was impossible to defend against. When games are tight set pieces can turn a game on its head, and we seem to fall short badly on them, was a great feeling to see us score from a corner. I think players are inspired to move a bit when they know the ball will get past the first defender.
Guest Jungle Barry
Its scary when Nicky Butt takes your attacking freekicks. To be fair to him his free kick taking is actually fairly decent. It's his inability to pass the ball to team-mate 5 yards away that grates.
olliemort
Worth having him in the team for his corners alone

Unless that's just selective memory. I can only think of about 4 times he's had a dig this season, and of those he hit the bar at Villa and had one heading top corner against boro on monday before on of the people in the wall got enough on it to send it out for a corner. I actually think his finishing is one of his better attributes
TRon
Guthrie's never going to pull up any trees but he's filled in quite nicely on the problem right hand side. We'll need to sign a proper right winger once this car crash of a season is over.
Ronaldo
Guthrie's just turned 22, he could be on hell of a player for us long term
Mowen
I like Guthrie, he's tidy, retains possession better than any of our other midfielders and seems to understand the game well. He's unexciting for the time being but could progress. It's shocking that he's ended up being our best CM this season mind, he needs to be learning from those around him, not trying to drag them up to his level. SteveMc
He needs a beast of a player alongside him if he is going to play in the centre of midfield. I wouldn't argue that he hasn't been a decent acquisition though.

Cajun
He is exactly the sort of player we should have as a squad player at the moment. He is young, gives a shit and has a bit of talent about him.

My only concern is he isn't strong or dominant enough for the defensive role and he hasn't got any goal threat to play in the advanced role. That said, he's technically light years ahead of Nolan and moves and passes better than both Nolan and Butt. Barton's on his way now, but I'd have liked to see him alongside Guthrie, I think they would have dove-tailed nicely.
johnnypd
technically he is very, very good, but i just don't think he has the physical (or mental) attributes to ever be one of the first names on the teamsheet at an established premiership club. He's only just turned 22, I don't think you stop growing until 23 and even then he's got a chance to bulk up. As for mental attributes, they'll com with age as well
