Are there benefits from circumcision?

 

There are several:

 

1 Many older men, who have bladder or prostate gland problems, also develop difficulties with their foreskins due to their surgeon's handling, cleaning, and using instruments. Some of these patients will need circumcising. Afterwards it is often astonishing to find some who have never ever seen their glans (knob) exposed before!

 

2 Some older men develop cancer of the penis - about 1 in 1000 - fairly rare, but tragic if you or your son are in that small statistic. Infant circumcision gives almost 100% protection, and young adult circumcision also gives a large degree of protection.

 

3 Cancer of the cervix in women is due to the Human Papilloma Virus. It thrives under and on the foreskin from where it can be transmitted during intercourse. An article in the British Medical Journal in April 2002 suggested that at least 20% of cancer of the cervix would be avoided if all men were circumcised. Surely that alone makes it worth doing?

 

4 Protection against HIV and AIDS. Another British Medical Journal article in May 2000 suggested that circumcised men are 8 times less likely to contract the HIV virus. (It is very important here to say that the risk is still far too high and that condoms and safe sex must be used - this applies also to preventing cancer of the cervix in women who have several partners.)

 

A BBC television programme in November 2000 showed two Ugandan tribes across the valley from one another. One practised circumcision and had very little AIDS, whereas, it was common in the other tribe, who then also started circumcising. This programme showed how the infection thrived in the lining of the foreskin, making it much easier to pass on.

 

5 As with HIV, so some protection exists against other sexually transmitted infections. Accordingly, if a condom splits or comes off, there is some protection for the couple. However, the only safe sex is to stick to one partner or abstain.

 

6 Lots of men, and their partners, prefer the appearance of their penis after circumcision, It is odour-free, it feels cleaner, and they enjoy better sex. Awareness of a good body image is a very important factor in building self confidence.

 

7 Balanitis is an unpleasant, often recurring, inflammation of the glans. It is quite common and can be prevented by circumcision.

 

8 Urinary tract infections sometimes occur in babies and can be quite serious. Circumcision in infancy makes it 10 times less likely.

Skipper Special: We Need Toon Army More Than Ever

NEWCASTLE United skipper Michael Owen has sent a message to the Toon Army ahead of their Carling Cup showdown with Tottenham Hotspur - "We're in this together and we need you more than ever".

 

The Magpies are still without a manager as they prepare to face the North Londoners and Owen accepts it's been a difficult period for both players and fans alike.

 

But the Newcastle captain believes that if any set of supporters are able to inspire a team to victory then it is the Geordie faithful.

 

"The fans play a massive part in this team, probably here more than anywhere else," he told nufcTV.

"The supporters are not stupid. They know that we are in the same boat as them.

MICHAEL OWEN has conceded that it is "difficult" for everyone connected with Newcastle United at the moment.

 

But he is confident that the fans will be behind the team in tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie with Spurs at St James’s Park.

 

Owen said today: “Yes it is difficult for everyone at the minute, the players included. But it is always important to have the supporters behind you and it will be great if we have them behind us against Spurs tomorrow night.

 

“The supporters know what position we are in, and we know what position they are in, and really, we are all in this together and we are trying to get the results for not only them but everyone connected with the club.

 

“I think that fans and the players both appreciate each other’s situation. It’s a difficult situation but more than ever we are in it together.

 

“We are paid by the club to perform and we are not going to do certain things the fans do – that’s not our job.

 

“And whatever feelings the supporters have, we know that they will always give us fanatical support out on the field and that is so very important to me and the rest of the players.”

 

Owen will go into tomorrow’s game boosted by United’s performance in their last meeting with Spurs back in March – a 4-1 victory at White Hart Lane master-minded by Kevin Keegan.

 

And while Owen snatched the winner against Coventry City last month, coming off the bench in the previous round, he has also scored in his only start in the Carling Cup for United – last season’s 2-0 success over Barnsley.

NEWCASTLE’S players were “sad” to see Kevin Keegan leave St James’s Park, Michael Owen has admitted.

 

Owen said today: “We all liked Kevin Keegan and we were sad to see him go. We are all feeling it at the moment.

 

“But we have got to snap out of the doom and gloom and try and get some confidence and results, and at the minute not picking up the results is hurting the players.

 

“We are as much in the dark as the fans as to the next move, and it does not make it any easier as Kevin Keegan was very popular with the players and the fans.” 

Owen has already played under FOUR managers in his short time at St James’s Park.

 

He was signed by Graeme Souness in the summer of 2005 for £16m from Real Madrid.

 

And since then Owen has seen Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce and Keegan ease themselves in and then back out of one of the hottest seats in football.

 

Owen added: “You almost become immune to these happenings in football nowadays and I have seen plenty in my time.

 

“I had three managers in the space of a few months at Real Madrid.

 

“It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it goes.

 

“But players are paid to play and we have got to go out there and perform.”
