Manchester United Striker Michael Owen Still Being Paid By Newcastle United - Reports

New revelations in the move that took the England striker to Old Trafford...

New Manchester United signing Michael Owen is still having half his wages paid by former club Newcastle United, according to north-east source The Sunday Sun.

The English tabloid has revealed that the England international is owed £220,000 by the relegated Magpies.

The former Liverpool striker cost the north east club £37 million in transfer funds and wages, and is entitled to have any shortfall in his wages at United made up for four weeks under severance rules.

The 29-year-old has apparently taken a pay cut of £105,000 to £50,000 since moving to Old Trafford, and is entitled to have the shortfall made up for a month.

Strikers Mark Viduka and Peter Lovenkrands, as well as Brazilian defender Cacapa are all due similar payments, meaning the club owes nearly £800,000 in 'golden farewell' payments.

The Magpies were relegated at the end of last season, and are expected to release or sell many of their high earners in order to cut the wage bill.

The club are currently in the midst of a takeover, with owner Mike Ashley desperate to sell the club.

The club are yet to appoint a new manager, and it is thought that the new owners, when a takeover is complete, will appoint a new boss immediately to bring some form of stability to St. James' Park.

Striker Owen is smiles better at United, beams Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Michael Owen could became an Old Trafford hero after seeing how the 29-year-old striker has responded to his first week's training with his new Manchester United team-mates.

The United manager said: 'There is no doubt he could really get his goalscoring form back on track with us. But really he has never lost it.

'Although he had a few injury problems at Newcastle, he kept up the excellent goals-per-game ratio he has had throughout his career. I've been really pleased with the way he has trained. He has worked hard -but the main thing is he coming into work with a smile on his face. He is really enjoying himself.'

Owen, right, is relishing the opportunity he has been given by Ferguson's dramatic swoop when the former Liverpool player was running out of options. There had been offers from Hull City and Stoke City, while Everton had shown interest, as had a couple of Turkish clubs.

But having shown little inclination to take the player on themselves, many of United's Premier League rivals now think the Old Trafford boss could have pulled off a masterstroke.

Hull manager Phil Brown said: 'We would have loved Michael to have come here and we're happy about having been in the frame to get him. But once United came in, that was it. I can see him really getting back into top gear.'

Owen jets out this week for United's tour of the Far East. The party includes the likes of Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic, who were allowed a longer break after their international duties.

Glad the poor little fella seems to have found happiness at last.

MANCHESTER UNITED new boy Michael Owen is still costing Newcastle more than £50,000 a week.

And the Magpies face paying a staggering £700,000-plus in wages to Owen and his fellow out-of-contract players Mark Viduka and Cacapa for the month of July.

The trio all left Tyneside as free agents on June 30.

And the Sunday Sun reported a fortnight ago how Newcastle were liable to continue paying them in full for a month if they failed to find new clubs.

Owen, of course, clinched a shock move to Manchester United last weekend.

But we can now reveal that the Magpies are still obliged throughout July to pay Owen the difference between his salary at St James’s Park and his new £50,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford.

absolute p!ss take
