Dinho lad
http://www.goal.com/en/news/636/sevilla/2009/01/09/1052866/sevillas-kanoute-fined-for-palestine-message Freddy Kanouté has been handed a €3,000 fine by the Spanish Competition Committee today, for his post-goal celebration on Wednesday evening. The Malian striker lifted his top to reveal a t-shirt with the word Palestine across the front, as well as words in Arabic, and has been found worthy of a punishment under article 120. The rule prohibits players from revealing messages of a religious or political nature on the pitch, and hence Kanouté has been fined €3,000, according to AS. The news comes on the same day that Miguel was handed a three-match ban for his rant at a linesman, and Vicente was given his ban for a red card, all on the same evening in the Copa Del Rey. Kanouté did receive thanks following the message though from many fans, and also from the Palestine embassy in Spain. Similarly, the Israeli ambassador in Spain did not see anything wrong with the message, saying that it would not 'incite violence.' However, the Competition Committee have decided to stick to the rules and have given Kanouté a fine for his actions. Sevilla take on Deportivo La Coruña in La Liga this weekend, and then also meet them again next week in the return leg of their Copa Del Rey tie. pathetic. Mistle17
Its just fucking stupid. Its not like Kanoute was stating a racist comment or something that could easily offend people. Football has lost all its sense...
Thespence
Its just f***ing stupid. Its not like Kanoute was stating a racist comment or something that could easily offend people. Football has lost all its sense... Most footballers & clubs should know anything political is banned. I remember the hoohar over Fowler & his "doCKers" t-shirt. Staying with Liverpool, The FA had a chat to them about players wearing "Free Michael now" t-shirts.
oldtype
I don't disagree with the fine. If would start getting out of hand pretty soon if you let players display political messages at matches. You wouldn't want a Toon striker celebrating his goal by lifting up his shirt and flashing the words "Vote Labour!" Would you?

Unlucky Luque
He knew what was going to happen, was fined and rightly so. Why bring political shite and other conflicts into football? Stupid.

Bollocks tbh. 350,000 people (mostly from the ruling socialist party) demonstrated in support of Gaza in Madrid yesterday
Guest sittingontheball
Good on the Spanish people, I didn't hear that news and applaud it! As for Spanish sports fans, they have a record of abusing black footballers and Lewis Hamilton. That's what my comment was based on.

As for Spanish sports fans, they have a record of abusing black footballers and Lewis Hamilton. That's what my comment was based on. Tell me - is this a f******g political forum or a football one ? You want to whine about Gaza p*** off to the Guardian forums - you'd fit right in with the anti-semitism there (and no, I'm NOT jewish. I'm W.A.S.P. Just get fed up with the curious memory lapses of Palestinian suicide bombers etc etc) I said when the Israelis pulled out of Gaza that this would happen and it would be because of constant rockets and suicide bombings and guess what ? Problem is, thanks to Hamas, their civilians are paying the price as well as them. They are bullied and terrorised as much as Hamas's enemies - you seen the YouTube of Hamas thugs forcing kids to be human shields ? Vomit-inducingly sick. Kanoute will be a hit with people like you and a tit to people like me. Most won't be bothered either way. Its just f***ing stupid. Its not like Kanoute was stating a racist comment or something that could easily offend people. Football has lost all its sense... Was it a political comment ? YES He deserved the fine, and more. Guest Phil K
Here we go again. Fair comment I do bite, I agree. But hell - a one way one angled post with no answers likely from the other side aint right. Angry at the over-reaction of the Israelis I may be, but I get monumentally p*****d off when no criticism of the other side happens. But I won't do what I normally do, fair enough ? Apart from one character who wishes to take it further - OK ? No. You clearly wanted to make your opinions on the matter known, yet bollocked him for making his. Typical BNP tbh Post PhilK edit: Yes it is a footballing context when discussing the Spanish public, and their record on racial issues in the recent past.
