Sunderland reserves seems to be 1st team players getting fit or just getting games mixed with youngsters, ours is the next step up for the youngster/not so young anymore "products" with the rare appearance from a first teamer. We rarely seem to use the reserves properly (ie getting players match fit again or players who should be knocking on the first team door getting regular games elsewhere). James Spray's 66th-minute goal for Wanderers was just reward for a dominant second-half performance from the visitors. The result brought to an end United's three-match losing sequence but the Academy Group D title is now well out of reach with Sunderland pulling 16 points clear after their 3-0 victory at Stoke and needing just one more win to wrap up top spot. United started brightly with Samuel Adjei bringing a fine fifth-minute save from Daniel Wright two minutes before Danquah pounced to open the scoring. The Dutch teenager robbed Louis Harris as the Wolves centre-back tried to bring the ball out of defence, and rattled a low 18-yard shot into the right corner. A Spray 25-yarder held under the bar by Jak Alnwick was Wolves' only threat in the first half-hour and when Samuel Adjei was brought down in the box by Danny Batth <OK> nine minutes before the break it looked as though United would put the match beyond their opponents. But Danquah skied his spot-kick as Daniel Wright went left and that gave Wolves new hope. The Midlanders might have been level on 40 minutes when Kyle Bennett flicked on a near-post cross but with Alnwick stranded and Nathan Mendes-Laing ready to turn the ball into a gaping net, Jack Price stretched and put his right-foot shot over the bar. Wolves made two interval substitutions - and that seemed to turn the game in their favour as United lost their shape at the back. Magpies centre-half Jeff Henderson, making his comeback from a lengthy lay-off, had to leave the action at half-time and with right-back James Taylor moving to central defence alongside skipper Callum Morris - Stewart Bath came on at right-back - United were left unbalanced in defence. When Alnwick skied a 48th-minute clearance, Wolves substitute Sam Winnall was left with a great chance but volleyed his shot straight at the retreating keeper from the 18-yard line. Two minutes later Taylor lost possession to Spray but when the Wolves striker crossed to the far post, Mendes-Laing, sliding in, could only poke the ball past the left post. Within a minute Winnall picked out Mendes-Laing for the Wanderers winger to flash an 18-yard shot past the left angle. That flurry set the tone for the second half as United fought a mainly rearguard action, and only a timely tackle on the hour from Morris denied Ashley Hemming a goal. Dan Neary replaced Danquah, but in the 66th minute Wolves were level. Price played a long ball down the right and when Paul Dummett failed to cut it out the powerful Spray was left clear to win the race for the ball with Alnwick and turn a right-foot shot inside the left post from the edge of the box. Twice in a minute United forward Dan Williams shaved the woodwork from outside the box, but it needed a fine 80th-minute double save by Alnwick from Spray and Nathan Rooney to keep the scores level. Greg McDermott, returning after a hernia operation, made way for Aaron Spear five minutes from time and United almost pinched victory two minutes later when Williams shaved the left post from 20 yards, but the draw was the least Wolves deserved. binnsy Posted March 30, 2009 Share Posted March 30, 2009 can't believe Owen isn't getting a run out, our so called best player and big hope for getting the goals to keep us up has the perfect chance to get some minutes into his legs and get some sharpness back in his game. He should've been the first name on the team sheet, Alan Smith should also be playing, he needs match fitness if he's going to be required to play in the run in as well and where is Edgar, not on international duty as far as i know and he hasn't played much recently.
