Newcastle United Reserves 3 (Moyo, Airey, Edmundsson)

Kilmarnock Reserves 2 (McKenzie, Racchi)

In front of the watching Alan Pardew, a young Newcastle Reserve side beat a Kilmarnock team boasting a fair deal of first-team experience in a practice match at the Magpies' training ground.

United should have scored more than the three goals they did manage - two coming in the first half from Yven Moyo and Phil Airey and the third scored by Joan Edmundsson in the second half after the Scottish side had levelled the scores.

Moyo put Willie Donachie's team ahead after just five minutes, when he headed home from Samuel Adjei's pinpoint right-wing cross, and Airey - playing his first game since October - slotted home like he had never been away.

A cross from Patrick Nzuzi hit the top of the bar before the lively Adjei sent a lob just wide and Airey shot just off target.

Danny Racchi shot straight at Ole Soderberg, back from a loan spell with Chesterfield, then, after Adjei had shot into the side-netting after rounding goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola, Rory McKenzie pulled a goal back for Killie with a good finish on the stroke of half-time.

And ten minutes into the second half, Racchi levelled the scores with Soderberg helpless after neat play from the Scottish outfit, whose first-team face Celtic at the weekend.

However, parity lasted just five minutes as the Magpies regained the lead with a well-worked goal. Substitute Remie Streete's long ball was controlled by Moyo, whose good run and cut-back was coverted by Edmundsson.

Jaakkola made a good save from McGorrigan before Bradden Inman ran from inside his own half, only to shoot wide.

And the Finnish goalkeeper went on to make fine stops from McGorrigan and Inman as the game finished 3-2 to Newcastle.

Newcastle United Reserves: Ole Soderberg; Patrick Nzuzi, Michael Riley (Louis Storey 46), Jeff Henderson, Tamas Kadar; Samuel Adjei (Remie Streete 46), Greg McDermott (Ryan McGorrigan 46), Michael Richardson (Joan Edmundsson 46), Yven Moyo; Bradden Inman; Phil Airey (Dan Taylor 46)
