Liam Lawrence also seemed to take a number of corners from outside the corner area.  Cheating bastards basically.

This is something I did notice and with the linesman standing next to him don't know how he got away with it!

It's fine and good criticising long throws (and I agree the delay is ridiculous), but its clear what they are attempting to do is make the most of their set-plays.

When a club's on-field capabilities are as limited as Stokes are they have accepted that they are not going to get many goals from a period of flowing game play.  So they have identified set-pieces (throw-ins, corner kicks, free kicks) as their best opportunity to score, especially since they are guaranteed to get at least a dozen of those per game.

I think they have done this very successfully.  It doesn't produce pretty and exciting football, but it does keep them further up the table.  I think its one of the strategies NUFC should have adopted back at Christmas, realising we are simply not getting the required goals from running play, so we need to concentrate more on set-plays.

Exactly. It's not pretty but it's effective for them and, to be fair, it's exploiting set-pieces that is going to make sure they spend another season in the League.

The end justifies the means.

It's a very effective tactic, especially when those throws are fast, low and more accurate than any corner.

On the other hand, it's a bit unfair, in that a team is gaining more of an advantage from a throw in than they should really get, and doesn't make for great football. I wouldn't like to see Stoke become the model for promoted teams, with a long-throw specialist and a load of big, physical  players to take advantage. If the tactic became too popular, FIFA would probably have to look at banning them.

Tbh, if we had someone who could do a throw in like that would we not make the most of it? Of course we would. Delap's throw ins are amazing. Ok he wasted time while doing them, but Harper wastes equally as much for his goal kicks.

Geremi & R.Taylor both have good chucks, I think they may be able hit in & around the same distance as Delap but there throws involve loops, where Delap can do that flatter throw that is like a cross.

Its probably football snobbery to be honest.

Most teams would use a long throw if the opportunity arises but I think people assume that Stoke's whole game plan is about lumping it up front to get as many thrown ins as possible

We all want to see brilliant flowing football - not a style of play based on 1, albeit successful, set piece.

Exactly, its the fact that he gets so much power on the throw and its flat and not looping that makes it so dangerous. His throws come into the area with a lot more power than most throw ins.

When Allardyce was here it got to the point where  some people were rumbling/booing Geremi going from one side of the pitch to the other to take a long throw in.

I am waiting for the day when our lot boo a goal, you know its coming.

i think it was the fact that every throw in, corner, free kick, drop ball had to be taken by geremi, even if he was at the other end of the field, just struck me as being a bit set-piece greedy

It stopped us taking a quick throw or quick corner which cost us momentum from an attacking postion and allowed the other team to set itself for defence.

Short sighted thinking if you ask me.

Cunt.

the whole spectacle of him taking a throw in on Saturday annoyed me.  First the ball boy wipes the ball with a towel, then Delap wipes it with the towel, then wipes it with his shirt.  The Stoke fans begin to make some noise, going "woooooaaaaaahh" as he steps back, then runs forward

.......then its cleared by the head of Sebastien.

I think they will stay up but will have a mare next season.

I think we should be pleased we didnt concede to one of his throws. Of anyone in the league, we would seem most culpable to one of them.

I bet they went into the game thinking they would score from at least 1 of them.

in the game at SJP. Stoke improved a lot when he went off. Although he has a long throw he is a nowhere near a Prem standard player.

Our goal came from a long throw, okay not direct it was knocked out then put back in and Carroll scored, long throws are good thing to have at hand but Stoke take the piss and use it very well if they need to waste time.

Surely that is for the ref to handle though. If opposing managers feel strongly about it they can speak to the 4th official on the touchline and complain and he will communicate that to the ref. Its up to the ref to decide if they are taking too long.
