Dave
http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/322925/ANDY-CARROLL-CROCKED-Newcastle-hitman-fractures-ankle-in-training.html NEWCASTLE hitman Andy Carroll has fractured an ankle in training. He was clattered in a tackle by team-mate Kevin Nolan and the injury will cost him an England Under-21 call-up this summer. The setback could see him struggle to make the start of next season. Carroll has been an important player for boss Alan Shearer since he took over seven games ago, scoring the first goal of his reign at Stoke and being used as a key sub. The 20-year-old had been told he would get his first Under-21 call-up and be named as part of Stuart Pearce's squad for the Euro Championship in Sweden. His absence for relegation-threatened Toon at Aston Villa is a real blow. But Carroll and the entire Newcastle first-team squad have made the trip to the Midlands. Only Joey Barton was told not to bother travelling, as Shearer looks to carry a sense of unity into the club's make-or-break clash. Shearer told his squad he wanted a defiant show of togetherness on the final day. Even the suspended Sebastien Bassong and injured duo Habib Beye and Michael Owen will be there. A source said: "Andy and all the injured lads were told they would be going to Villa. The boss said he wanted everyone together. He wanted the unit to be tight. But Barton was told to forget it." Nice one Kevin.

Ashley17
I'm not doubting Dowie's medical qualifications but I swear in the Chronicle last week he was quoted saying Carroll had done his ligaments?

Guest toonlass
Nice to know that the lads are being encouraged to work as a team, even if they are injured. And well done Big Al for keeping Barton well away. Sets an example to the others and keeps rotten apple out of the barrel.

La Parka
Would have been nice to see him play. Gave fulham something different to deal with when he came on. Hope we can help him develop, hope he doesn't stagnate, ala shola.

Guest Stephen927
I would have to see the challenge before I judge Nolan, just sounds like an accidental clash from the article, I wouldn't expect any player to not give 100% in training. Unfortunate for Andy, he could have given us another dimension up front if we were struggling.
Guest saintscoobz
Nile Ranger, come on down! Now wouldnt that be a story
Pilko
Surely Shearer should be wrapping them in cotton wool? This is our biggest game since Kelly vs Portsmouth for gods sake, no time for uber competitive training...
Guest Stephen927
It's good to have the same intensity in training as you would in a match situation. It gets the players into the right mindset. If you lay off in training all week chances are you'll lay off in a match.
biggs
Tbh i thought football was a non contact sport now ffs Nolan would have been great to have Carroll in for the last game
