Guest johnson293
So, assuming Ashley doesn't sell us (which is f***ing nailed on, tbh): what's his plan? Looks like its been answered today... http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2009/10/14/nufc-boss-hughton-suffers-ashley-cash-blow-72703-24927799/ CHRIS HUGHTON will be told by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley that he must work with a shoestring budget during the January transfer window – if the club is not sold. The Chronicle understands that the backroom staff at St James’s Park and senior players were hopeful that a paper-thin squad would be bolstered during the January sales should Newcastle maintain their lofty position at the top of the Coca-Cola Championship. Two months ago, just before the transfer window closed for business in August, there were several pleas from senior Toon stars like Steve Harper to increase the size of the squad. But the only permanent addition was Peter Lovenkrands on a free transfer. However, with the current regime at United still counting the cost of relegation and smaller crowds at St James’s this season, Ashley will continue to exercise caution when the window re-opens for business on January 1. Indeed, the United owner appears content to take advantage of the Football League’s loan market rules which have already seen them snap up the services of Manchester United’s Danny Simpson, Blackburn’s Zurab Khizanishvili and Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood. And Hughton and his number two Colin Calderwood will have no other option but to bring in players on a temporary basis unless Ashley decides to officially take the club off the market. Many observers in football believe that the squad Hughton has at his disposal not only lacks depth but also experience and would struggle in the top flight if they regain their Premier League status. Yet a United source told the Chronicle: “There have been several players, both established stars and up-and-coming prospects, who have been offered to Newcastle by clubs around Europe. “That’s a common theme at this time of year in the build-up to the January window. “But so far they have been told that Newcastle aren’t about to spend big amounts this winter.” A flurry of first-teamers departed in the summer, including Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye and Sebastien Bassong, to leave Hughton’s roster looking threadbare. It has also emerged that United failed during the August transfer window to bring back Magpies cult hero Andy O’Brien on loan. A move to lure the Republic of Ireland defender is understood to have collapsed due to the percentage of how much of O’Brien’s wages they would have to pay. Yet Newcastle could turn to O’Brien again in January, with the frustrated Yorkshireman yet to figure for the Trotters this term. O’Brien, of course, shot to prominence on Tyneside in 2001 when he netted an equaliser at the Stadium of Light in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. And he was part of Sir Bobby Robson’s side which reached the Champions League in 2002.
Guest Roger Kint
All that says is we havent spent anything on players that have been offered to us up til now. This isnt news. Also if Ashley was selling its pretty obvious he wouldnt be interested in January deals anyway, complete waste of a story to entice panic merchants. Even if Ashley was here why would anyone believe he would 'spend big amounts this winter'?

afar
Lol Since when has Andy O fucking Brien been a cult hero ?? He was a donkey, with a big nose, hope we never see him sully the black and white shirt again, despite our relegation.

johnnypd
If we're still top two then logically it would be sensible for Ashley to invest a bit in January in order to try and rubber-stamp promotion, not to mention building squad strength for the following season. of course he's a total buffoon so he won't even attempt. in fact i wouldn't be surprised if we made a profit in January and came out of it weaker then before. Guest toonlass
Reminds me of that film where the Baseball team owner dies and his missus decides to buy a load of shite players to get the team to finish last so she can relocate them to somewhere nicer. And they find out about it and start winning each game and win the league.

The Prophet
Is the man actually a complete fucking numpty? (Daft qurstion I know). Say he keeps the club until the end of the season to double his money. He keeps virtually the same squad bar the odd change and we some how scrape over tahe finish line. Then what? Some potential buyer is going to turn round and say: "Oh look there's a club that isn't in the best place financially and has a playing squad likely to get relegated during the following season, I'll pay £200 million for it". Not only is every potential buyer going to run off at the sight of such a ridiculous price but we're likely to be in for another season of disaster on the field. This team has already proven it isn't good enough to stay in the Premier League and no amount of team spirit is going to improve that, unless Hughton recently learned how to perform miracles. The building needs to start in January. Not only will this freshen us up for the remainder of this season but it will give us a platform to build on in the summer. Oh I give up, rant over. We haven't got rid of the wasters who've never done well for us despite high wages, they're all still here. We'll need to invest massively if we go up and want to stay up. I do think though he's right in a sense that we need to start planning for that first season back in January's window. How strong or not our position is by the start of the window, should shape what we do. Unfortunately, the bloke hasn't got a clue and we won't be sold, so who knows.
