Probably going to be pilloried for this, but I actually thought Milner played reasonably well yesterday.  Would have taken Young off (regardless of penalty miss) way before Milner.

Not quite sure why no-one seemed to pick up on how dreadful Terry was.  Embarrassing to watch him at times.

:undecided:

Was that a 'everyone on this forum said Terry was awful' or 'he played really great'?

I was more referring to tv pundits rather than here.  Wasn't on forum last night so don't know what people said.

I thought Terry was quality last night.

Fair play to Carroll BTW, looked a player in this tournament.

Should have started last night instead of Welbeck who has looked horribly out of his depth.

More bullshit. Welbeck won every header and linked up play well and actually tried to pick up Pirlo. The lad had a decent game and tournament. He's better than I gave him credit for. Carroll won his headers but they went nowhere and lost the ball every time with his passing.

And the other three matches?

A narrow midfield with hard-working wide players is simply the way Hodgson wants to play. Look how narrow and deep Young played, is it because Cole can't defend? Milner is decent defensively and its probably why he starts but that's part of the plan, not because Johnson is weak defensively.

Hodgson sent the team out to play defensively. Each and every game, did you not see that?

Fair enough - I thought he was awful.  He was alright at the usual last ditch defending and heading the ball away, but I thought his positioning and decision making was very poor.

I still doesn't get it it why play invisible Herderson  does absolute none... like when he was at liverpool ... i still doesn't get what manager + coach see on him.

I would genuinely have rather seen Perch playing there instead of Henderson.

What did Carroll do particularly better than Welbeck? Both won flick ons but didn't offer much.

I think Carroll did OK compared to the horrendous displays of some of the others last night but people are seriously overrating his two appearances. For the few times he brought the ball down his distribution was hit and miss, 53% is a very poor stat.

I thought he was poor against Sweden from 20 minutes onwards too.

Your standards must be different to mine then.

Whey, not Ronaldo, but a good performance when given the chance. He controlled the ball, held it up and passed it. He scored one good header from the only chance he had. Not bad IMO.

Of course I did. You seem to be arguing against something I didn't say.

Not bad yes. People are seriously overrating his performances in this tournament though, simply because those around him also offered very little.

I'd use the phrase "looked a player" to describe Rooney's performances in Euro 2004, not Carroll's in 2012.

Bullshit.

Welbeck had 82% pass completion rate. Carroll 53% pass completion.

You need more than just those statistics to go on though. For example, if Carroll chests the ball down amongst 3 Italian defenders, but just fails to get it to a teammate, I would say that was decent play. But it would go down as a failed pass I assume.

From watching the game, I thought Carroll did pretty well when he had the chance.

I just meant he looked capable of putting in good performances in international competitive matches.

His shite teammates did make me more grateful for any kind of constructive play though, that's true.

There were a few times later where the Italian defenders seemed to stand away from Carroll and wait for him to bring it down. Only to then try to take the ball once he had it at his feet, or wait for him to pass before trying to win it back.

He scared them at first and I thought he was going to make an impact but they had him sussed imo. Pirlo also seemed to get even more space once he was on, although that was also largely down to the midfield being abysmal and out on their feet by that point.

Rooney is the only one with some actual class in the box. Rooney & Gerrard are the only players i'd like to see a chance fall too in this England side. What's a seasons best total for any of the other lads infront of goal in the PL? Carroll with 13?

Something like that, Defoe has a similar maximum as well.

I would bank on Wellbeck and Carroll too, they can both finish. And to a certain extent Young (when he remembers how to play again).

There was a fair few times when the pass was just poor. He was doing the difficult things then failing at the easy ones. He wasn't bad but he wasn't particularly good either. When he's on the pitch the long ball is too common. I think he played 10 minutes more than Welbeck but he received the ball a lot more which didn't help really. For most fo the second half the tactic was Lescott > Carroll > Back to Italy.

Hodgson might as well have selected Leon Britton tbh. At least he's used to maintaing posession and playing simple passes forward from deep at Swansea.

England had no central midfielders capable of consistently receiving the ball deep (in space), turning and playing the ball forward to a teammates feet. It was incredible to watch.

The number of times Scott Parker would just knock the ball back to a defender immediately after receiving the ball from one, was ludicrous. You can see he's totally unaware of what is around him before he receives the ball. Really poor player in that respect.

Thing with Carroll coming on was that he only really got the same service Welbeck had for the majority of the match. Long balls from Hart getting to him 40 yards from goal. The gameplan didn't change much if at all with his introduction. Welbeck was actually winning a good number of headers too. In that respect it was a pointless substitution, doing the same thing and expecting a different result.
