Guthrie is a plodder - that is why Liverpool allowed him to leave. They very rarely let decent players go, like Man U.

Warnock? Crouch? Alonso?

All much better than what they have now. Benitez has made a lot of baffling decisions in getting rid of players.

and to be fair benitez didn't want to let alonso go.

Keegan was the one who saw premiership potential in him, thats why he brought him in.

Any of those west brom midfielders next to our lot would look poor. You cannot expect him to dominate a well working midfield on his own.

KK Only signed him because he was cheap. Little Dennis was the one given the money for big signings. Guthrie did nothing at Bolton and has done nothing for us.

Except be our joint top assister in the league last season and current top this campaign.

He did the season before when he tried to sign Barry, that's why alonso took the huff and asked to leave.

So he makes the odd goal, he costs us twice as many with his poor positional play and lack of ability to keep hold of a ball.

He looks reasonable in this team and this division because BOTH are short of real talent - look how West Brom's midfielders left him chasing shadows, and he is probably the best midfielder we have(Jonas is mainly a winger).

This is as good as he will get and. like many of his team-mates, will need replacing if NUFC manage to go up.

I bet KK would have got rid of him - he let Peacock and Kelly go after promotion and BOTH were more effective in their positions than Guthrie.

The fact that so many rate him shows how far the expectations of fans have fallen in the past 5 years.

I agree with this. Guthrie gets over-praised because the rest of our midfield is decrepit, but he's an ordinary player who lacks the drive or balls to dictate play. Far too easily dominated and will look even worse if we go up.

guthrie gets praised because he was ok in his first few games and people are lothe to say that a player they've called good and want in the team is actually as poor as the rest. (its that favourites/scapegoats thing again)

Right-midfield might just turn out to be his best position eventually. Don't rate him one jot in the centre of the park, but his crossing is pretty good.

Have a look at last seasons games when he went missing in midfield.

Too slow to play on the wing, and he doesn't get up and down the pitch enough. I think that's why a lot of our players prefer to play in the middle, they can jog around in a smaller area and generally coast 90 mins.

he's not too slow, he just has the movement and positional sense of the rest of our midffield. (ie, none)

I was thinking more of a very poor man's David Beckham type. Butt, Smith & Nolan have been poor for about 6 weeks now and not scoring goals, and yet Guthrie has done fuck all to give Hughton a reason to drop one of those in there in the centre. 22-23, just a poor footballer imo.

He fkn lost the ball way to much yesterday, he had options to pass it but instead tried to beat a man then lost the ball or smashed shots over the bar.

trying to to do too much imo. our midfield looked so bad yesterday i'm not sure i can blame him. i'd keep him if we go up but i wouldnt want him first choice. jonas and routledge and two new lads in the middle, surely those running the team can see how badly we need reform in CM?

What's with this 'he's no good because Liverpool let him go'? - we're not in a position to choose the quality of player we have in the team alongside the Liverpool side

You can see why Liverpool let him go. He's weak as piss and loses the ball far too easily. That's the point.

Was he ever even capped at Under 21 level? The amount of crap players you see play a dozen games or so at that level, don't even think he had a look in.

It's bollocks. He's played on the right wing most of the season, yesterday was the left, give the lad a go in the middle with Jonas and Routledge and he will perform. He's clearly lacking physically, but to make an outlandish comparison, nor is Cesc Fabregas, players like that, like Riquelme, need faster players around to pass too and use as outlets, putting him on the wing with two strikers that show no movement, will rarely if ever produce results.

It's clear to see he wants to cut inside even on the right wing. We need our midfield to look something like;

                 Routledge Guthrie Barton  Jonas

                                       Nolan

But how's that relevant at all? Liverpool let him go because he's not good enough for Liverpool, he is good enough for us.

He isn't good enough for us for the same reasons he was allowed to leave Liverpool. Like I said he's too weak and loses possession and hope. He can't even make a mark dropping down a division. All this bollocks about him being played out of position doesn't excuse him for losing 50/50's and not being able to hold the ball under the slightest pressure.

and that pressure comes a lot faster when you're playing in the middle. unless you pretend you're a centre half like a butt and smith and only ever face our goal.

But the standard of competition and opposition is higher at Liverpool. He has his weaknesses but he is good enough to play for us - those weaknesses are still there, but they don't get shown up as much in this league. On the whole, he has impressed this season.

Guthrie "weak in possession". He's one of our only players who can keep the ball FFS.

He's been pretty good for us this season, in spite of the fact he's been played out of position in almost every meaningful game.

If he was in WBA current side, we'd all be talking about what a good player he is.
