Newcastle United 3 - 0 Reading - 15/08/09 - post match reaction from page 22

Thought we built on the West Brom result with a decent victory but we'll see what we're really made of on midweek.

Harper 6 - Not a lot to do, commanding from set pieces, kicking could have been better.

R. Taylor 6 - Solid defensively, delivery into the box was hit and miss.

S. Taylor 7 - Commanding performance against an unsettled attack.

Coloccini 6 - Another decent performance against an attack lacking a physical presence. I still worry about him against the stronger forwards but did alright today.

Enrique 8 - Commanding at the back supported the attack well, a great full back display. If I was going to be picky his delivery was inconsistent at times.

Barton 6 - Got better as the game went on, was sloppy to start with but it became apparent he'll do well in this division when he finally gets himself fit.

Nolan 6 - Better, needs to get himself fit but looked a lot sharper today. His distribution continues to improve and generally looked more of a threat today.

Smith 7 - Did well again the defensive midfield role, needs to learn when to control himself.

Jonas 6 - Always threatening, linked up well with Enrique, but for the love of God does the man know how to cross or shoot.

Carroll 6 - Won most things in the air, battled well, probably unlucky not to get himself a goal.

Shola 9 - Still a cumbersome b****** but at the end of the day he scored three goals, well played lad.

Lua Lua 5 - Quiet when he came on, looked light weight at times.

Xisco 5 - Some classy touches but looked unsurprisingly off the pace.

Geremi - Can't really remember.

we won 3-0 dominated the game, your marks on average are 1 below.

Was it Ryan Bertrand who didn't bother trying to get the loose ball near the corner in the build up to the second goal? Just watched the highlights again, Nolan deserves some credit for keeping that alive there, was good play and a fantastic cross in.

Felt good to watch highlights after a game, knowing that we weren't going to suddenly fall apart and that there was another 2 goals to come.

Peter Beagry (sp?) "Ameobi will guarantee them at least 15 goals"

:spit:

Whats wrong with that ? He WILL get at least 15 in this div.

No-one was saying that before the match. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it?

Bit late but my thoughts:

Harper - Not much to do, nearly made a balls up by changing his mind coming out for something then going back, Taylor hacked clear I think.

R Taylor - Much much better, defending and attacking. Great ball for Shola's 2nd.

Enrique - Pretty good, brilliant ball in for the 1st goal, still sometimes indecisive at the back but generally good.

S Taylor - Absolutely crunched somebody with a one footed tackle in a 50-50 on half time, played like a man possessed. Please don't go :(

Coloccini - Error in the 1st minute but otherwise ok, the confidence in him when we went ahead, like the rest of the team, was visible.

Smith - Had a mental 2 minutes, otherwise did his job. Get's deeper and deeper as the games on and was almost a 3rd centre half by the end.

Nolan - Fat mess.   Was our worst player but deserves some credit for chasing that ball down in the corner for the 2nd goal. Nearly gifted Reading a goal by being unable to control a football, reminded me of an elephant trying to pick up a pea.

Barton - Did ok, mandatory booking. Probably out for 3 months now though.

Jonas - Usual from him, although he had 2 shots on target!!

Shola - Three goals, happy for him, a bigger miracle is that in the first half he lost the ball but chased back into his own half and slid in on the Reading guy and won it back. Will be shit on Wednesday most probably

Carroll - I can't understand people saying he doesn't work hard, this boy grafts his nuts off. As already said though, needs some pace up there with him - and I mean a pacey goalscorer (i.e. not Lovenkrands)

Fans - When the players are on the pitch don't sing about Mike fucking Ashley, if you want to sing about that cunt do it at half time or something

Hughton - Xisco and not Ranger was odd, but whatever. Brought on Geremi as a pisstake.

Reading - Either we were awesome or they were terrible

Fuck right off man, we have every right to tell Ashley where to go. And we all supported the lads all the way through.

Yes we supported the lads but do you think the players want to hear anti-Ashley songs? It's probably all they have to hear about but for 90 minutes they get to play football and get away from the off the field shit. We want Ashley out! As if he didn't know man  Get a grip

I thought Nolan was absolutely anonymous (for us) as usual. Good work for the second goal but otherwise he was probably their biggest threat.

I thought his through ball to Jonas (when he missed the sitter) was the best pass I have seen from a Newcastle players in yonks.

To be fair, the anti-ashley chants where kept to a minimum, and they only happened at lull points in the match.  The pro-newcastle songs and getting behind the team was the general feel to the crowd.  Infact, I reckon we had around 8 renditions of Get out of our club, and 2 stand up if you hate Ashley chants.

I know what your saying, but on the scale of things, for 90minutes of football, that is very little considering the position the fat useless greedy twat has put our club in.

Can I ask if you where there? (and I dont mean this in a 'Im better than you if you werent kinda way')

Yes I was there. SJH Corner. The first "Stand up if you hate Ashley" was a couple of minutes in, and fair enough, it was during the early stages of the game. Just about everybody stood up. Then it happened again about 20 minutes later, and quite a lot of people groaned.

I'm well aware people want to vent their spleen at him but what are you expecting? He knows we hate hi, he's trying (supposedly) to sell and us call him a fat greedy bastard isn't going to make him think "fucking hell, maybe they're right." I agree the support for the players was exceptional, but I dread another "cockney mafia out" situation which, I think, went a way to us losing that game vs Hull.

I agree mostly, however you cant expect 35k not to demonstrate or vent frustrations.  It just wouldnt be football.  Plus, how else are we to make any feelings known, when the club speak to absolutely no one?

Write a letter to points of view?

I just think, thats enough...we've had our say, hopefullly he'll be gone soon and we can get on with being a normal club.  I dont think you'll see any protests on the scale of the Hull game, however I shouldn't imagine Ashley will be able to sit in 'his' seat for much longer.

Anyhow, cracking performance from the team all things considered.  Hopefully it will continue.

You can't expect 35k to not complain because that's what we do, that's how other fans perceive us now. Like I said in my original post, could have done something before or after the game or even at half time on some level, although might have been hard to compete with the PA system. Anyway, it's all moot because like you say, you couldn't expect 36k to not sing about the twat that's dragging us down.

Will walk back in, Barton will be dropped and Nolan will be using his blistering pace down the right wing with Butt and Smith using their collective creativity in the centre to destroy teams.

Matty, any idea if there's a full size version of that pic, I've love to have that as my desktop image :yikes:

Only one I have is a photoshop jobby.

The original one I stole was only about 280 x 350 pixels.  :(

Damn your avatar makes me want to fap...

Nicky Butt doesn't deserve a place in the team at the moment, if only for the performances of the current players. That said, i'd probably drop Nolan for Guthrie - shoving Barton into the middle. I really don't like the idea of shoe-horning Guthrie onto the wing cos it's a waste of talent... but having Smith, Barton, Guthrie and Jonas all on the same pitch will win us games in this league.
