Jack Wilshire on Loan - Yes Please!

NEWCASTLE UNITED are understood to be waiting in the wings to see if they can prise Arsenal starlet Jack Wilshere on loan.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has publicly declared the 17-year-old attacking midfielder is available for loan and hinted that “a club at the top of the Championship” may fit the bill.

Hughton has already made it clear to the Chronicle that there will not be an abundance of new faces in the January transfer window.

But he is exploring the possibilities of bringing in loan players on potential six-month deals, with Zurab Khizanishvili already back training with Blackburn Rovers and Marlon Harewood’s deal due to expire in the next fortnight.

Harewood’s situation is still under review at St James’ Park despite his recent brighter performances which have resulted in him bagging four goals in seven starts and six sub appearances.

Hughton is mindful of the fact he has Shola Ameobi back fully fit, as well as having Peter Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger and Andy Carroll to keep happy.

But with Khizanishvili’s part seemingly over and Harewood’s future not yet secure, Hughton will be keen to fill the gaps left by their departures.

And Wilshere would certainly be the type of player to get fans off their seats at St James’.

The left-footed, attacked-minded youngster burst on to the scene at the Emirates this season and has made six appearances for Wenger.

Hughton told the Chronicle: “There are quality players out there – that’s what we have available to us.

“For us, it’s about getting what we need in the transfer window. But we also know, after that, we’re also able to bring in players on loan.

“We’ve got to be very, very open to that.

“At the moment, it’s quite a tight squad.

“We’re quite happy with it, but the most important thing is we’ve got to make sure we’ve got enough to take us through to the end of the season.”

Hughton also hinted strongly that a player of England Under-21 ace Wilshere’s calibre would fit the bill, but he acknowledged any loan signings would have to be guaranteed their fair share of run-outs in the Toon first team.

He says: “I think when it comes to loan signings, one of the problems when you’re taking players is how much football can you give them?

“You’ve got to be confident that if you bring somebody in on loan, that you’ve got to give them the amount of football they need.

“There are always decisions on any thoughts you have on players on loan – it’s something you think through carefully.

“But at any stage we feel we need to bring in quality young players, or experienced players, we’ll make that decision.”

Wilshere started Arsenal’s recent Champions League defeat in Athens against Olympiakos, but Wenger will make a decision within the next two weeks on where the Hertfordshire-born player completes the season.

He said: “There is a chance for a loan, if we have an interesting opportunity.

“I would prefer it to be in the Premier League, but at the top level of the Championship could be interesting as well.”

Meanwhile, Hughton has urged Jonas Gutierrez to improve his goal tally of just one strike.

He says: “He has got such energy and enthusiasm – he’s a player who wants to be here.

“What he needs to add to his game now is goals, and I genuinely feel they will come from him.”

no way will he be coming here. wenger will want assurances regarding first team playing time. hughton will never drop a fit nolan or smith, and butt seems first choice back up. has brought on pancrate for the right. don't know how well cemented jonas' place is in the team but that is the only spot hughton would consider him - or as second striker to carroll/ameobi.

hope i'm wrong cos bring some real creativity to centre of park. also if we dont get him, u could see boro cardiff qpr swansea watfoed - in fact name any championship club as they would gor for him.

need to get him for our midfield, but also to keep him away from our challengers' teams.

He will be at West Brom no doubt,  They play good football, nit like the kick and rush we are playing at the moment.

More loans? What's going to happen come the summer if we get promoted? I really can't see us buying all the loanees and if we don't the squad will be alarmingly short in numbers. Having a team with 3 or 4 loans gives an inaccurate picture of the squads long term size and strength. It's very much a short sighted approach more focussed on papering over cracks than really building a team and squad capable of not only getting promoted but staying there.

How long for though ?

Til the end of the season is OK

Something I've been worried about too.

But I'll worry more if and when we're back in the Prem.

Can't afford to think like that though. Ashley would be better off trying to bring in some up

and coming players (like we did with Lee and Cole in 92/93) and try and build a team capable of cutting it long term in the Premier League. Speculate to accumulate Mike you useless blob!

It's catch 22 though isn't it? You can't buy premiership quality players on premierleague wages in our current position. They won't sign and we can't afford them.

I could see him being a massive disappointment.

There's a chance he could be like Vukic, great individual skill but not enough all round physical presence or nous to keep a Nolan out of the side. I don't think he'd be a guaranteed starter which means Wenger wouldn't want him coming here.

I'm not basing my belief on that.

It's more, when he plays for Arsenal he plays along side a midfield who pass and move, in our midfield there's very little movement, so he would be having to create his own space which would really limit his effectiveness.

Doesn't fit in with the sort of midfield players Hughton likes, Smith, Butt, Nolan, Geremi.

I think we maybe enjoying Smith and Nolan in this league but Hughton is stuck with Butt and Geremi.  Nobody wants them, we are stuck with them.

I would hardley say he likes them, maybe butt a little.

What you say would perhaps make sense if Hughton had signed any of them, he didn't.

Given the situation we are in he can only really work with what we've got.
