If we were offering sensible wages then I find it hard to disagree with the club over that. It's pointless to reduce the wage bill, only to let it creep back up again and get back in the mess we were in before.

 

Simpson's a decent player and I think we should keep him, but not for too high a price.

His draconian wage policy will keep the club attractive to potential investors and leave any change in the wage structure to new owners.

 

Already Ashley’s hardline wages policy has impacted on manager Chris Hughton’s ability to strengthen his Championship table-toppers in the January transfer window with a permanent move for Manchester United’s ­on-loan right back Danny Simpson stalling.

 

Simpson, who becomes a free agent in June, was after a deal that would have given him £15,000-a-week rising to £20,000 if the Magpies were promoted.

So, just to recap - if I remember correctly, since Hughton became manager, we haven't signed a player permanently - only on loan, is that right?

 

And this window, all 3 mooted permanent deals have now fallen through (Killgallon, Beckford and now Simpson)?

 

Is this Hughton unable to close a deal, or the powers above him not doing their best to get the players he wants?

I don't think Kinnear or Hughton have been involved in any transfer dealings. Fat Ash trying to buy players with pennies and small wages is at the root of our transfer failings. It's not fair to be blame Hughton for this, he probably just does as he's told and has minimal involvement in buying/ selling players.

You're probably right that its Ashley not sanctioning it/pissing about, rather than Hughton's fault.

 

Just remembered, we signed Lovenkrands permanently - but even that waqs drawn out, and completed after the window shut last time.

What strikes me is if you have cover in each position (a 22 man squad) if every one of them was on £30,000 a week that would be almost exactly £35m a year.

 

...Which is, as we've all heard on the grapevine, almost exactly what the wage bill has been reduced to....certainly when Butt and Geremi are out of contract come the end of the season.

Aye.  Could be a bit of NUST type maths going on there.

 

By which I mean he's put a £35m cap on wages...which the report has averaged to £30,000 a week.  Some will get more, others less.

 

It wouldn't surprise me if it was actually a £30k cap, player by player though.

 

Either way, the average Premier league wage bill in 2009 was £60m though.  So we'll not be competing on £35m.
