Danny Simpson (now retired)

Hope its a case of him asking for unreasonable money rather than us offering stupidly low wages, if its the latter then God help our chances in the future when we need to get better in :undecided:

If we were offering sensible wages then I find it hard to disagree with the club over that. It's pointless to reduce the wage bill, only to let it creep back up again and get back in the mess we were in before.

Simpson's a decent player and I think we should keep him, but not for too high a price.

@blefuscu74 CH said today that talks ongoing but as of last night no agreement on fee or wages. Not great news.

Providing it's actually him, he posted this as his status on Facebook last night.

"Has not rejected a contract offer at Newcastle, there is some stuff which is being worked on as we speak now and hopefully more will be known soon."

Is that his Facebook or some 14 year old kid saying he's Danny Simpson?

Not sure if this has been posted, but part of it mentioned the Simpson deal...

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Chris-Hughton-made-to-pay-as-Newcastle-owner-Mike-Ashley-wages-new-war-article290327.html

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has slapped a £30,000-a-week ceiling on the wages of new players coming into St James’ Park.

And boss Chris Hughton has been warned as he searches for three January recruits that any new signings must fall within those strict parameters as Ashley seeks to protect the £30million salary savings he has made in the last 12 months.

Ashley has slashed the wage bill over the last 12 months from £74m to £45m by getting rid of massive earners such as Michael Owen (£5m a year) and Mark Viduka (£4m a year).

Ashley isn’t looking beyond promotion and a return to the Premier League as he plans a fresh bid to find a buyer this summer if the Magpies go up.

His draconian wage policy will keep the club attractive to potential investors and leave any change in the wage structure to new owners.

Already Ashley’s hardline wages policy has impacted on manager Chris Hughton’s ability to strengthen his Championship table-toppers in the January transfer window with a permanent move for Manchester United’s on-loan right back Danny Simpson stalling.

Simpson, who becomes a free agent in June, was after a deal that would have given him £15,000-a-week rising to £20,000 if the Magpies were promoted.

A Toon source said: “Mike Ashley has had to take drastic measures to get the club back on even keel.

“But Chris Hughton is well aware that he can’t hand out Premier League wages while the club are still playing in the Championship.

“He knows what the budget stretches to and he has to work within that.”

The Magpies £1.5m bid to land Leeds striker Jermain Beckford has also hit the buffers as Ashley is again driving a tough bargain on both the fee and wages.

Without in any way wishing to defend Ashley, how on earth would having a wage structure be 'draconian' in footballing terms? It's probably the way forward for the game at all levels.

And it's fucking obvious that we shouldn't be offering Premier League wages until we are a Premier League club.

Shite article.

So, let me get this straight: Ashley 'slaps' a 30kpw ceiling on the wage limit, which means Hughton can't land Simpson on a 15kpw deal?

Don't know how those wages compare to what other clubs are paying but I'd think there aren't too many capable of paying Simpson 20k a week, and the ones that are wouldn't sign him. 15k sounds about right. Not massive wages by any means but these are the times we are in.

I'd be looking to pay him 10-15k IF we get promoted.

probs already posted, but the chron today claims his move has collapsed.

So, just to recap - if I remember correctly, since Hughton became manager, we haven't signed a player permanently - only on loan, is that right?

And this window, all 3 mooted permanent deals have now fallen through (Killgallon, Beckford and now Simpson)?

Is this Hughton unable to close a deal, or the powers above him not doing their best to get the players he wants?

Bloody frustrating, either way!

Whatever you think of him, even Kinnear managed to bring Nolan and Ryan Taylor in on permanent deals!

I don't think Kinnear or Hughton have been involved in any transfer dealings. Fat Ash trying to buy players with pennies and small wages is at the root of our transfer failings. It's not fair to be blame Hughton for this, he probably just does as he's told and has minimal involvement in buying/ selling players.

You're probably right that its Ashley not sanctioning it/pissing about, rather than Hughton's fault.

Just remembered, we signed Lovenkrands permanently - but even that waqs drawn out, and completed after the window shut last time.

Didn't see this hidden away in here.

What strikes me is if you have cover in each position (a 22 man squad) if every one of them was on £30,000 a week that would be almost exactly £35m a year.

...Which is, as we've all heard on the grapevine, almost exactly what the wage bill has been reduced to....certainly when Butt and Geremi are out of contract come the end of the season.

Obviously there will be players on a lot more than 30k a week though, you would have a hard job persuading everyone to accept the same wages.

Aye.  Could be a bit of NUST type maths going on there.

By which I mean he's put a £35m cap on wages...which the report has averaged to £30,000 a week.  Some will get more, others less.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was actually a £30k cap, player by player though.

Either way, the average Premier league wage bill in 2009 was £60m though.  So we'll not be competing on £35m.
