Danny Simpson (now retired)

Sounds promising. Although I'd rather we signed a left back and moved Santon to right back.

agree, personally have no problem with us upgrading simpson. it might actually be foolish to give him a new contract at this point. if you look at out strongest 11 on paper he's clearly the weak link imo

Yeah, it's clearly foolish to give him a new contract.  Who cares about having 'back-up' players or having genuine 'squad'.

Aye, Danny would be a much better back up than say, Perch. Did we give him a 5 year contract?

fans do, club dont. we haven't got one natural left back at the club, we're never gonna have two specialist right backs. Tavernier.

So, you aren't a fan, but the club then?

Santon should be our first choice RB from what i've seen of him... We should be addressing the left back spot in January... In the meantime I'd be tempted to swap Raylor for Simpson so he is on his natural side and would perhaps close the slight gap that lies between them both defensively but giving us a much greater gold threat at set pieces... Therefore giving Raylor the overall edge...

Ryan Taylor has never been as good as Simpson has at right back for us.

I wonder if this is more to do with the fact that he has not signed the new contract and as they don't do compromise, the only outcome is to sell the player.  I am not certain that it is because they view him as a weak spot in the team.

I would agree with that assessment. We know Simpson was offered a new contract over the Summer. As we know (see Nolan and Barton's contract offers), when the club make an offer it is a take it or leave it offer. The club make the best offer they are willing to make. It isn't an opening offer with room for negotiation. They don't negotiate. If the player doesn't want to accept the offer then the club look to sell.

I can see the press release on February 1st already. 'We didn't want to make knee jerk sinings to replace our outgoing right full back, a transfer request that shocked us at the time.  It is well known that signing players in January is notoriously difficult, and in such a short space of time we targettted players that were the right fit for the club, but other teams just didn't want to sell.  Besides we've got James Perch and he can play there, right?'

If Simpson is criticized for backing off too much, then Raylor is the exact opposite, often guilty of diving in and over committing. Simpson is the superior defender despite his limitations.

I wasn't disagreeing... But as Raylor offers more of a goal threat and scoring goals from open play is our major problem then this in my eyes gives  Raylor the edge overall...

Does anyone really give a fuck right now what we're 'targetting' for January? There's half a season between now and then, forgive me for worrying about the games we actually have to play with this squad.

yeah mate, i'm the club.

dear me, i'm merely saying that we're not gonna have two senior right backs at this club in the near future. so having said that, i'm not keen on danny simpson being our first choice right back for the next 5 years. of course i would like more cover but we're not gonna get it while ashley's here, i could moan about it (which i do everywhere else) but i decided to be realistic, give it a try.

I agree with you. We won't have two genuine senior RB's in Ashley's time here.

I just thought that it was your very own opinion that it would be foolish to give Simpson a new contract, which it wouldn't be.

if we can bring in a left back or someone better than simpson at right back then imo, it would.

I disagree, cant see any talent in the lad. Just your average run-of-the-mill defender who does everything expected of him but nowt else.

Also has the rather worrying habit of reversing into his own goal under pressure.

Seem to vaguely remember him being taken for a proper ride by Arteta last season. Decent as Arteta is, I shudder to think how he would cope with Young, Rooney etc.

Remind me to go on a holiday during those back-to-back manchester games in november.

Couldn't agree more Dave. At this point in time I really don't want to hear about any future transfer windows. People who have paid for season tickets want to watch a team that will deliver now, not on the never never.

The lads been through the mill what his daughter being born early like.

Lets be honest though....He is shit!

No ability going forward at all, his positioning defensively is awful. Pace gets him out of trouble quite a lot.

For now i'd be giving Raylor a go @ RB with Santon @LB. See how that works. If Raylor fails to make the position his, give Simpson a second chance.

If both of them dont improve then come January we really ought to be getting Cissokho and moving Santon to his more prefered right hand side.
