worst that could happen* with beckford is that we pay say 2-3m for him and eventually he doesn't cut it in the PL when we do get back there

you'd always get your fee back for someone like him, look at Earnshaw for fucks sake he's been doing it for years

the other lad Boyd will be a waste of time and money, you can virtually guarantee it

*assuming he doesn't turn into an injury prone cripple of course

Judging by Hughtons "he's one of several players we're looking at and we have other irons on the fire" comments in today's Chronicle, it wouldn't surprise me if we were already baulking at the asking fee, no doubt inflated by a million after yesterdays goal and headlines.

Unless this deal is already done, this comment could be on the mark - how many times have we seen this happen with NUFC transfer targets over the years ? It used to happen in Joe Harvey's day, we were linked with players like Andy Gray when he was with Dundee Utd, and the club refused to pay the extra 10,000 Dundee wanted ; likewise with Alan Hansen when Gordon Lee was manager - Hansen, then at Partick, was constantly linked with us in the media, but the club wouldn't pay the asking price of 100,000 ; Liverpool eventually did, and the rest is history.....

When the club signed Andy Cole in 1993, we knew NOWT until the deal was done, and that's the way it should happen.

As Hansen would say on MOD ; 'SHAWKIN', ABSOLUTLEY SHAWKIN...!'

After a bit more thought on this, I'd recommend getting neither. Beckford doesn't look any betetr than what we currently have and Boyd I've never really seen play - but he cannot exactly be amazing if he only plays for Rangers and there appears to be very little Premiership interest in him.

Cant see any of our current strikers scoring that goal yesterday atall.

That's why Sholas scored goals against Barcelona and Chelsea and other teams. Beckford has scored one goal from s*** defending and goalkeeping and despite being a handful all game, I don't think he's any better than what we have. I'm not saying he is s***, but everyone - including myself (originally) thinks he wonder-player because he had one good game vs ManUre when they were completely off form...

Quoted for truth.

Shola's a slightly different player now to back then isnt he. You think he'd have taken down a ball from that distance and slid it under the keeper whilst outpacing brown?

Man Utd's defence is still atleast midtable prem standard right now & he beat them twice playing for a league 1 side. Thats a pretty good sign. None of our current strikers would've scored that goal in a long time.

Ive doubts he'd make the run, i dont think he'd control it to well or catch up with it if he didnt & if he did catch up with it ive doubts he'd end up finishing it from that angle.

He'd obviously do better in other situations. Beckford/Loven upfront could be a useful pacey strikeforce if we had the midfield to feed them.

We need someone with a bit of pace and movement up front, that can keep defenders on their toes and run onto balls.

It will benefit Jonas to as we know Jonas` strong points are not crossing but rather creating chances with his pace and looking up to someone who he can pass to                on the deck  (not long ball, high inswinging crosses)  so IMO Beckford fits the bill....not another big centre forward like Boyd who has less movement and stamina.

Jermaine Beckford is poised to move to Newcastle United this month but for up to double the fee that had been expected before he scored the winning goal for Leeds United in Sunday's FA Cup win at Manchester United.

Newcastle had lined up Beckford long before his dramatic impact at Old Trafford but sources suggest Leeds may demand around £3m for the 6ft 2in former RAC repair man whose coruscating change of pace arguably masks significant flaws. Just six months ago Beckford, whose contract expires at the end of the season, was rated in the £1.5m bracket.

Chris Hughton, Newcastle's manager, is, however, adamant his Championship-topping club will not be held to ransom and are prepared to play a long game. "We're in for a striker and Jermaine is one of a few players we are interested in," said Hughton, who has made a bid for the Sheffield United centre-half Matthew Kilgallon, yesterday. "But we won't panic. We have to be patient, there is a long month ahead of us."

Beckford, signed by Leeds from non-league Wealdstone for £45,000 less than four years ago, registered his 20th goal of the season on Sunday but, publicly at least, Hughton does not appear overly dismayed by the attendant fanfare.

"Jermaine's profile now goes up because the FA Cup game was on TV but everybody knows that was just one game," said Newcastle's manager. "There is no deal done yet for Jermaine but all I can say is that we're working very hard on bringing in new players and I am very confident we will get the ones we want."

With Leeds unwilling to lose Beckford as a free agent next summer, the player has long looked destined to join Hughton's side providing Simon Grayson, the Leeds manager, feels confident he can sign an adequate replacement. The situation is complicated not just by the possibility that Beckford's heroics at Old Trafford may attract a bid from a struggling Premier League club but that Leeds know that selling Beckford now constitutes a calculated risk and will only part with him in exchange for significant cash.

If Grayson's side, currently cantering towards promotion from League One, offload Beckford now and once again somehow fail to exit football's third tier, serious questions will be asked. On the other hand, a windfall of £3m or so could help fund next season's expected Championship campaign.

One thing appears certain: the impending wrangling between the Leeds chairman, Ken Bates, and Newcastle's owner, Mike Ashley, will add a new dimension to the term "playing hardball".

Hughton's hand looks set to be strengthened by the imminent departure of Geremi, with the Turkish club Ankaragucu his likely destination. Significantly, a percentage of the former Chelsea midfielder's staggering basic £58,000-a-week wages is understood to have been earmarked for Beckford's remuneration.

While there is some concern that Newcastle's bid for the striker may yet be hijacked by Premier League suitors, it has not gone unnoticed in top-flight circles that, despite his wonderful pace, the 26-year-old requires several chances to score and benefits from excellent service at Leeds where Robert Snodgrass, especially, creates numerous openings.

Not that it should be any real surprise that a striker playing part-time just four years ago is not quite the finished article.

Newcastle believe there is much more to come from a classic late developer who required loan stints at Carlisle and Scunthorpe before fully establishing himself at Elland Road. Encouragingly, Beckford is used to surmounting setbacks. After starring at Walpole Wanderers, a London boys team, as a boy, the Ealing-bred youngster joined Chelsea's youth set-up but failed to make the grade.

No matter, a decade on he is one of this transfer window's hottest properties and, reading between the lines, Grayson seems resigned to losing him. "We are not looking to sell Jermaine," said the Leeds manager. "But money talks with any player."

Not sure why the media never bother to research such things but before xmas the Wealdstone chairman said on Talkshite that they had a sell on clause which he obviously was sweating over, pretty sure he said 20% but could well have been more(apologies if already posted)

That would be a huge boost for Wealdstone though :kasper:

Another good reason for Leeds to push up the fee.

to be honest, i think there are players in that leeds team other than beckford who should be a priority.

we have half decent championship-level strikers but not a decent RW or CM . we also need cover for LB/CB.

Don't expect Beckford to do much moving mind. His movement is often intelligent but he isn't dynamic in his coverage of the final coverage.

What sort of coverage should we expect of the coverage in the final coverage? :)

 He constantly plays on the shoulder of the centre half's looking to get into the channels between the centre halfs and the full backs. We have nothing like that at the moment.

Ranger: Powerful, looks to play in front of the oppositions back four rather than behind.

Carroll: See Ranger.

Shola: Most luckiest striker in the history of the world..... don't know what he does!   But on a serious note is similar to Ranger and Carroll in terms of him wanting to play in front of the defence.

Loven: Looks to get in behind, but seems to pull wide a lot to find space, which is probably the reason for his average goalscoring record.

As we don't have guile in the centre of midfield and it looks like Hughton doesnt recognise this, Beckford signing is a must in my opinion as it will slightly give us a different dimension to our direct style of play.

As long as he plays with a strijer who is willing to drop deep to pick up the ball it can work, he has a real eye for goal finishes really well. CB's will worry about his pace, see them drop deep to try and not leave him spaace behind means we can push forward more.
