Guest neesy111
Can't undertsand why it has gotten to this stage, and they haven't gone into adminstration before now. Yes, they would take a 10 pt hit, but they are looking certs to go down anyway. At least in that case, they would be able to offload players outside of the window to try and save the club from going to the wall altogether (like Palace). So if the winding up order goes through today, does that mean Portsmouth cease operating today, or does that just force something like adminsitration? as a business they've done it stupidly, the first person you pay debt's to is the taxman, as they hold the most power etc
Thespence
Just out of interest, say a prem team does go to the wall. Do all the players become free agents with immediate effect?? Assume they count as assets, so they'd be auctioned off? Maybe. That would be the case for administration as we saw with Palace & where a administrators deals with best offers for saleable assets. This would be liquidation so the loan players would return to there clubs. The free agent players would be allowed to join other clubs.
WarrenBartonCentrePartin
IR are 'keen' for Portsmouth to be wound up according to Bryan Swanson. Dunno if it was just his choice of words, or whether not that means the IR are unlikely to accept anything other than a £7.5m cash settlement. Cardiff & Southend's cases also adjourned, however for another 28 days.
Guest neesy111
tbf, as a taxpayer i want as much as that clawed back, especially as tax returns are at a 10 year low due to the recession

Plus, they'll have also noticed that after they paid the players & other debts last month they still only have £1.5m cash available to offer to the tax man and that was after selling £10m worth of players. Even if they avoid being wound up today they'll still probably end up in administration before the end of the season at which point HMRC know they'll never get their cash. Winding the club up is most likely the only way that HMRC will get the money they're owed.
geordiedean
sad case of affairs and a huge wake up call to the rest of football that the bubble is going to burst if a prem league team which was fa cup winners 2 years ago ceases to exist....mind its happened in italy with fiorentina and napoli going bust and coming back
Thespence
Spot on Ikri. HMRC has always disliked the fact that football debts have to be paid off in full when clubs are in administration. Well they don't have to but then the clubs would be chucked out of the PL or FL, so administrators are sort of black balled into paying them off in full. Where as liquidation football debts will be in with the rest as the chucking out of PL or FL is no longer a option.

Maybe the taxman is owed rather a lot of money by football clubs, letting Pompy go to the wall is a warning to the rest of them.

Ishmael
I don't like the idea of one club being wound up to set an example. Any club that gets their finances should face being wound up. Simple.
MKSC
Get ready for AFC Portsmouth or Portsmouth FC 2010 or Portsmouth City FC or whatever, coming to a Zamaretto Football League Ground near you in the not too distant future. Well not too near most of you as you are in the North East. It sounds like Her Maj's Revenue and Customs are not prepared to accept anything other than the liquidation of Portsmouth FC, and as gutting as that is for Pompey fans and football in general it is the only sensible option. For too long football clubs operate on massive debts and survive only on bank loans. The whole of football needs to get it's house in order and if this is what it takes then so be it. Although the salary cap is a good idea it will never happen. It's ok doing it in sports where the competition is pretty limited like NHL or Super League (realistically where else would the top players go?) but if English Football capped a clubs wage bill then the top players would all move abroad where the clubs can still pay the silly wages. Fifa/Uefa will never put a mass salary cap in place so it's a non starter.

Guest johnson293
Latest update from The Times... 12.19pm: Latest from Nick Szczepanik at the High Court: Portsmouth, HM Revenue & Customs and their briefs suddenly exited for a discussion in the ante-room. It sounded as if a 28-day adjournment was being agreed for when the case comes up "2nd time around" - ie at the end of this session rather than at the beginning of the 2pm shift. A somewhat predictable outcome if I'm right.
MKSC
"Clubs like AFC Wimbledon who've risen again." Is that some sick joke? I can't stand AFC Wimbledon. Would be a completely different case. AFC Wimbledon were formed when Wimbledon FC were still playing. Wimbledon FC only stopped when the name was changed to MK Dons but they are a continuation rather than a new club. You try telling an AFC Womble fan that his club are a new entity and not the phoenix from the flames of the FA Cup winning Wimbledon FC and they practically explode. The most recent case in point would be Aldershot Town FC (1992) who were formed after the original Aldershot FC folded mid-season. They started in Ryman Division 3 and took about 15 years to get back to the Football League.
