But I also wouldn't be surprised if we manage to sell or at least loan out LuaLua as Hughton doesn't seem to rate him.

If Hughton has any sense he'll use him as a makeweight in the Beckford deal. I don't want us to lose him, but if he ain't playing then we might as well move him on, for his own sake.

Probably been mentioned countless times in the past, but how much do you think England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 affected our spending that summer and January? Pretty sure I remember seeing that Ashley stood to lose something ridiculous like £80m that year because of England replica shirts he wouldn't be able to shift that would normally sell like hot cakes for a major tournament. Optimistic hat back on here, hoping this summer he makes a load and invests a bit in the summer anyway.

  • 2 weeks later...

Whoever used this thread to say we'll get absolutely jack shit looks like they've backed a winner.

Killgallon and Simpson deals now look dead and the Beckford bid seems unlikely to be raised to the asking price. Plus Hughton today has already started with comments regarding how good the squad is and how having Lovenkrands in form gives us another option.

http://www.nufc.com/2009-10html/2010-01-13plymouth-h.html

Looking beyond the game, with no tangible activity in the transfer window so far (save for a Geremi press conference in Turkey that lacked only a Noel Edmonds/Jeremy Beadle "gotcha" moment),  it's difficult to pass judgment on what our intentions truly are before February 1st.

On the one hand there were supposed bids for messrs Kilgallon and Beckford and alleged agreement over a fee for Danny Simpson with Manchester United - counter-balanced by failures to sign the first two and some worrying noises over the level of wages offered to the latter.

While seeing any Newcastle player score a hat trick is a rare and prized sight, the worry remains that anyone showing a hint of competence on the field is interpreted in the boardroom as a justification for not spending money.

Simpson wants too much? well, we've always got Ryan Taylor, who played in a defence tonight that kept a clean sheet. We've got no Harewood replacement? Who cares, Lovenkrands is scoring against Championship opposition - stop being so negative, we love this town and you're all great etc. etc.

Hughton may talk about targets and not changing his mind about the areas in need of strengthening, but there's no guarantee that those above him are of the same mind. After all, they have a track record of lying, or making statements that are "nothing more than an exercise in public relations", to use their own words...

Not being of the Keegan temperament, there's little likelihood of Hughton storming out if his desired targets don't appear and he ends up with, say, a central defender a right back and a striker on loan from Premier League clubs. And even if he did, well there's always someone else ready to take over.

The opportunity remains to blast through this league in the second half of the season with just a modicum of investment. Whether we do that, or just amble along with the Pancrates of this world hoping to stay just ahead of the chasing sides, remains to be seen. We really don't want to have to say we told you so. Honest.

So, we could have got a small fee for Geremi plus gettinmg rid of 58K off the wage bill but now it looks like he will be staying because dopey Ashley will not bend, for some reason or other.

I dont think this iodiot has heard of the term, speculate to acumulate or else we would have had 4 players in by now, probably for the same weekly cost as Geremi's salary or just over and we would be looking good for promotion.

I dont see anyone coming in other than the return of Harewood and Zurab on loan and with the form Forest are in at present and if we lose to WBA on monday, it could be play offs only for us.

So we're halfway through the window and:

Simpson deal isn't done yet, rumours of offering him rubbish wages

Kilgallon deal fell through, decided to stay despite evidence previously that he wanted to come here

Beckford deal fell through, decided to stay despite evidence previously that he wanted to come here

Great work so far chaps.

kilgallon decided he wanted to wait and see who comes in for him in the summer with rumour of everton wanting to pick him up on a free, now if you were him would you risk going to a club that may or may not be promoted and may or may not stay up or sit on your contract for 6 months go to everton on a free and pick up a nice signing on bonus and be at an established prem team?

I was more commenting on the ability of the club to sign the players Hughton made it pretty clear he wanted than their relative merits.

and they had a bid accepted for him according to reports and so did burnley, burnley decided against it because of ridiculous wage demands whos to say he didnt ask for 35to 40k a week off us and them and would you say hes worth that?

Burnley said Kilgallon's wage demands were way to high, and they pulled out, what's not to say that we did the same?

we end up with nowt insite, and will remain with no signings permanent wise until the parting of the ways with Ashley, other issue is of course that clubs are banging prices up for those in need in desperate times.

that seems to be affecting everyone, the lack of any transfer activity from anyone is obvious and its down to clubs not having cash and as such not spending and putting even more on their asking price for players (see kenywene jones no way is he worth 5-6m but supposedly it would take 12m plus to buy him)

I've heard some rumours (not sure of how reliable they are) that a new signing should be revealed just before kickoff tomorrow, or if his registration and such does not come through on time then he will be sitting in the stands. The rumours goes on that he is from Man Utd but he is not Simpson.
