Mike Ashley set to put Newcastle up for sale again

Published 23:00 09/01/10 By Paul Smith Exclusive

Mike Ashley is set to put Newcastle up for sale again in the summer if they secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The controversial Sports Direct tycoon failed to find a buyer for the North East club last season despite drastically reducing the asking price to secure its sale.

He eventually took the Magpies off the market last October and promised to finance a successful Championship campaign to ensure the fallen giants were restored to the top tier of English football.

But his decision was merely a temporary measure to ensure he limited his losses as Newcastle’s market value plummeted following relegation.

Ashley is well aware he is loathed and despised by the vast majority of die-hard fans that follow the club who have staged numerous protests to force him to quit.

Ashley is the first person to admit he made mistakes during his unwanted tenure of the club.

He forced Kevin Keegan to quit after appointing Dennis Wise to oversee player recruitment, appointed Joe Kinnear, snubbed Alan Shearer after he failed to keep the club up and proposed to sell the naming rights to St James’s Park.

A source close to Ashley said last night: “It is his intention to evaluate the situation in the summer.

“If the club can secure promotion he will almost certainly put it back up for sale immediately.

“He found it impossible to find a buyer at the first time of asking when Newcastle were battling for Premier League survival.

“In an ideal world he doesn’t want to stay somewhere where he’s not wanted. But he is a businessman and wasn’t prepared to give the club away so satisfy the widespread demands of the club’s followers.

“If the club can secure promotion it will undoubtedly make them a far more viable acquisition.”

Preparation for the Premier League out the window then.

Pretty obvious-

Up for sale end of May-

It will drag on through the summer

No signings

We'll panic on 31st August realising we have signed no one ahead of a tough Premier League season and get some loan players in and someone cheap permanently.

September- Club off market

And the cycle continues...

I think that was always bound to be the plan. Preparation for the Premier League was going to be limited whether or not he was putting the club up for sale; it's not like he would have given us any money. Fortunately this year - even though it's Hughton - we do have a manager who is good at not letting the shite above his head disrupt him. So i don't think the club being for sale in the summer will make a difference to our preparation either way.

If he can get us sold, and quick - then superb.

Not gonna happen though.

That's the problem. I think even those who don't particularly want him out (there are still some) realise it's best we move on, but if it takes all fucking summer again then next season is going to be absolutely embarrassing. Hughton still in charge, and this squad as-is? We'll be slaughtered.

If it's going to happen it needs to be done and dusted as soon as possible - we can't afford another long drawn out saga.

If he's got any sense he'll start concentrating on selling the club as soon as the January window is shut. That way, he can at least have people at the "initial interest / proof of funds" stage by the time the season ends in May.

Not a good idea if the inevitable disruption off the pitch starts affecting the results on it though. Of course, you wonder why he can't do this on the quiet...

As if he'll keep anyone in the loop, least of all Hughton, his staff and the players. Most likely it'll just be Ashley, Derek Llambias and Keith Harris @ Seymour Pierce doing it on the sly. We all know that Llambias would gladly come out and lie in the press and say a club sale wasn't going to happen, even if they were actively looking to flog it. The sale and purchase agreement thing especially means that no-one need know.

And this time, can he not just fuckin run the club and try and sell it in the background, like every other club does. Imagine how much of a disaster it would be if we had another summer like last one in limbo, but this time stepping up a level.

Guest optimistic nit

Why not just have the club up for sale now and just stick in a clause for Ashley to get more money if we get promoted in May.

So the sale contract is £100m + £50m if we get promoted.

he couldn't sell the club for 100m at the beggining of the season so i doubt he'd be able to do now. that way if we dont get promoted the new buyer is stuck with a club in big problems he's just forked out 100m for and if we do he's paying a third more than he would have if he'd bought the club at the start of the season.

We would be far more attractive to buy had that fat cunt not given Hughton 3 years contract instead of just letting him stay in charge until the end of the season. (Effectively enabling the new owners to pick their own man from the start).  :hmm:
