I would be very happy if we signed SWP, but his wages would be a huge concern for me. There just isn't value for money there.

Seriously? Very happy?

What is the cause of this happiness? He's shite man  Fair enough if you took the Ronaldo argument of being 'slightly less shite than what we have so meh okay I guess' but very happy? You guys actually watch him play or you just basing this on his reputation?

well if his agent is to be believed hes not so much concerned with wages as with playing football again so maybe he'll be reasonable

Fair play to him.

Don't see how anybody could rate him. There's murderers with a less violent first touch. He epitomises everything that is wrong with English footballers and there isn't a player at the highest level that I'd like to see in an NUFC shirt less than that muppet.

Each to your own though, accepting less than average is what people seem to do with NUFC these days.

Not sure how I'm accepting less than average for this team when I think he would be a good player for us. It's not like I'm banging on every day about us signing Championship players.

Championship players that are far more competent footballers than SWP, would cost a fraction in wages and have the drive to improve and succeed rather than pick up wages while they continue their regression towards retirement at our cost. SWP is exactly the kind of player as a club we've specialised in over the last few years and it's got us nowhere.

SWP is simply another Duff waiting to happen with the only difference is Duff was once a good player, whereas SWP was once an average overrated player who is now 100% steaming shite.

SWP hasn't played much this season so it's difficult to assess how good he is now, but in the previous 2 years at City he did alright in the league with fairly limited game time - 5 goals, 5 assists in 08/09, 4 goals, 8 assists in 09/10. He's not nearly as bad as some on here make out, he should still have a bit of pace, good dribbling ability, and can create out of nothing both for himself and others.

Saying that, I wouldn't want to sign him as we currently have a player excelling at right-midfield. I'm not against bringing in another player to compete for that spot but the whole point of someone like SWP is that while he can make an instant impact now he is also on the decline. give it 2 or 3 years and he'll be finished.

what we should be doing is looking for a young player who is prepared to be patient and fight for a position and, in a couple of years, make the right or left wing spot his own.

It would also make more sense to go with an adaptable player who can challenge first team players not only at right-midfield but also on the left or playing off Carroll - such as Taarabt (though he brings his own attitude problems).

the final reason i'd prefer someone else is SWP would be one of our highest earners - we can't really justify paying the extra dosh for what will be a squad player. i also have suspicions that, were a player that expensive/high profile to sign that Pardew would put them straight in the first team.

The main point of my argument, here.

I'm sure you'll except I have an irrational hatred of SWP that probably extends beyond how shit he actually is, but IMO SWP would be a pointless signing and somebody of above ilk would be far more useful. Especially with Barton being twice as useful on the right as SWP right now.

FWIW I really doubt we are looking at SWP, he really doesn't fit our current transfer policy at all. Unless Pardew is changing that.

hasn't he already said that we're looking at more experienced players? think i remember an interview along those lines, also hints against looking abroad in january. the fact we've allegedly been eyeing up experienced premiership players so far wouldn't rule out this kind of transfer.

saying that pardew also talked about bargains in the lower leagues. he will say just about anything if you put a mic in front of him.

The idea of 'experience' is the absolute pinnacle of bollocks IMO.

We need hungry, young players to progress not the exact opposite. Signing 'experience' is a one stop shop to stagnation and then slipping backwards.

It's questionable if we would have got promoted without the experienced players like Nolan and Barton holding everyone together

Of course it's not  The key to a successful team is right the mix of skill and pace, and youth/hunger and experience. We won't succeed with a team full of young, hungry players.

Plus experience will help us in the short term, and January is about the short term. It isn't the time to think about the future when we're still not safe yet - a striker and winger on loan will suit me fine.

Yeah Barton was a mainstay last season wasn't he.

We've got enough 'experience'. We need good players now. If we'd signed an experienced centre mid in the summer rather than Tioté we'd probably be about 10 points worse off.

Well dur. There's no reason why we can't get a good experienced player.
