Sunderland...

fwiw, I'm a Geordie, and I wouldn't dream of going to watch Sunderland play, especially if it was to watch them go down. Unbelievably sad as f***, and the type of thing I rip the piss out of them for doing.

Can't imagine going to see them now, but in the past I went to see them play a few times. Once against Cardiff and another time v Bradford. Also in the West Ham end at the SOS a few years back because i took my brother along. He's a West Ham fan. I didn't go to support Sunderland in any of these games obviously, but I was bored and my mates were going.

I didnt used to hate them as much as I do now though. Think I would just get annoyed and hate it if I went now.

On their chances at OT:

"-I simply don't see anyway that we lose this game. What do they have that we don't have apart from hype? Half their wins are through their opponents being intimidated because of the media. I will say it once again, I don't see anyway that we lose this game...."

"-What worries me is that half our team will be their team come Jan 31."

Impressive

Never went to Gillingham but did go to another game- during relegation season.Ipswich, it could have been the relegation from div1 tho cant remember.

I used to work with an older guy then who would be in his 70s+ by now , who used to have season ticket at both clubs- even still he was adamant he was toon fan, and even took piss out of makems. but just loved going to matches.

Personally I agree, its sad. My second team is any that are playing Sunderland- this is sad. I know this.

They have given us years of entertainment as theyve gone from shit to worse and back again, time and again. Smb is one of the funniest websites on the whole internet.

as for the 80s- it wasnt all that bad- at least we went out doors and played football , 12 hrs a day, we were fit and healthy, enjoyed the sunlight-  see my av. you really didnt want to sit and fuck about with that thing all day.

Anyone who wants an insight into what was missed during the late 70's early 80's football wise needs to have a read of that Black and White Daft book.

It gave me a look into what I'd missed by being born in the wrong era.

I'd rather watch football back then, so much so i'd take a hot pocket every match.

Fairly embarassing that Quinn is begging fans to come back. Looks like even the free tickets aren't working anymore.

Whilst the SOL is one of the better new grounds, Bob Murray was ludicrously optimistic in building it with such a high capacity. It's only ever full for Newcastle or Take That.

I didn't know that the original capacity was 42K but increased it by 7K in 2000.

Idiots.

;D ;D ;D

Murray was a very rich successful businessman who undoubtedly loved his club, but he had a chip on his shoulder about Newcastle as big as any of the rabid posters who populate the SMB forum.

His "one more seat than Newcastle" plan has to be one of the most stupid things a football chairman has ever said, it ranks up there with Saint Niall's "magic carpet" promises.

Maybe because when we decided to get it increased we were doing very well and filling the 42k on a regular basis.

As someone recently posted on RTG, "it's not fair to expect Sunderland fans to buy match tickets when many are struggling to buy bread and milk."

So why aren't fans returning now, now that you're doing as good as you were back then (if not better)?

Attendances are down all over the country, last year our average was 40k, this year it's 38k,it's hardly a massive difference.I know many lads who vowed never to return after the 19 point season in 2003 and they haven't,every match is available in the boozers now and people are just happy watching it in there rather then spending £30 odd quid on a ticket.

Fair enough. To be honest, the ticket prices really are stupid sometimes, but I don't blame the clubs as much as I blame the Premier League for not regulating the league correctly.

If we had a mackem manager who lived in Sunderland and spent each evening boozin with his mackem mates, and a team who despite the patronising noises wouldn't set foot in Newcastle except matchdays and preferred to live and socialise in Sunderland, I'd probably find it quite difficult to go along and support them.

Yet the day of the supposed Boycott to back Hughton and stick it to The Don of the Cockney Mafia Mike Ashley, we had one our largest attendances of the season, and one of the best atmospheres too.

It was a bit like when a granny falls over in Northumberland Street & she is waiting for the ambulance & the circle is formed to see what the crack is that is what SJP was like against Liverpool.

As I said I think it was more of era thing. 4 TV stations, net not widely, available so people thought instead of going to the social club to play 5 & 3s they would go to Roker Park instead. I wouldn't expect you to get it tbh.

Go back a bit further in history & loads of fans used to watch both clubs. Something I cant understand but again different era.

My dad used to do that when he was a kid. St James one week, Roker the next. Was common place back then.

Saying that though there should be thousands upon thousands of kids going. If i was a Sundelrand fan and if i could get a ST for £19 i'd be mad not to go for it.

My dad used to always want to see the all the North East clubs do well, that changed when the 3 legends started & he herd how some of the callers + Bernie went on about Newcastle.

Firstly the £19 tickets were last season not this season and secondly to purchase one of those an adult had to buy a full price season ticket.

The way you lot are talking you would think Newcastle sold out the ground every week, how many full houses apart from Sunderland games have Newcastle had in the last few year?

Aye, kids season ticket is only £19? Is that with a parents one though? Still, that's not a bad deal, like.

You have to admit our numbers are good this season.
