NUFC transfer rumours in the press

I admit it's very rose tinted, but the fact we can agree a deal with the likes of Tiote and BenArfa makes me think the players who've turned us down over wages are asking for more than they really are worth.

What makes you think Tiote is on high wages? Ben Arfa was in a very weak negotiating position too.

They're 'worth' the going rate, otherwise you won't get them and someone else will. Quite simple really.

Those others may be endangering the future of their clubs with spiralling wage bills though.  Granted we may be endangering ours with the risk of another relegation if we don't get the right players in.  Hope we can find a happy medium as we seem to have with the likes of tiote.

Highly doubt Tioté is on big wages like. Twente are a very strict, well run club financially. They wont have been paying much to a player who came from Belgian football and was regarded as a squad player. Be very surprised if he's on more than 20k.

Aye, but they're not paying him anymore.

I don't think he's on high wages that's exactly my point. If we can get players of that quality to adhere to a good wage then why can't people like Larsson? The sounds of it our wages are all average set wage with lots of bonuses to earn your money.

If Larsson's demands were the going rate surely he'd have his future sorted right now wouldn't he? Brum and ourselves have baulked at his demands, says more about him than us imo..

The wages under previous contract usually dictates to an extent the wages under his next employment. Unfortunately in the past we've been an exception to this norm.

He'd have likely been on around 5-10k at Twente, which is why I struggle to see him on over 20k here. Part of the reason our scouting system is in place to find this type of player is they wont add a lot to the wage bill. He is not a high profile and would have been happy to simply make the move to the Premier League.

(apologies to Dave for discussing figures)

I suspect that some of the competing clubs like Blackburn, West Ham and Villa, are feeling a bit more desperate and are prepared to pay over the odds in wages at the moment. Longer term, you're liable to end up with a problem.

Blackburn without question, West Ham maybe (though the new owners will surely have been shocked by the wage bill coming in) but Villa certainly won't. One of the problems Lerner had with MON seems to have been the excessive wage bill, particularly for players who he wasn't playing. The suggestion is that his unwillingness to cut the wage bill led to him walking out.

I can't see Villa paying over the odds, even if they shift players like Carew or Reo-Coker out.

Based on what the media guess the player is earning?

Based on simple economics. Second bit, I think it's a widely regarded fact that we have paid players over the odds. Murmerings from within the club over the old board aswell as the financial releases back this up.

on west ham they did just green light wayne bridge and 90k a week wages and want keane so yes they are willing to throw money around in a blind panic. Agree on villa though.

Really don't like this jan window, either keep it open all the time or shut the jan window because whats going at present isn't good for clubs long term finances as clubs just panic buy for stupid wages in the limited time of the jan window

He was highly rated within a league winning team and had just started every game in the world cup for his country. Might not of been well known in England but I'm sure he'd of been internationally known by scouts and managers.

Kinda agree with you on numbers though, I can't see him being on more than £30kpw. This regime appears to have become quite tight on wages (in a good way)

I don't mind it. It stops bigger clubs having carte blanche, plus if a club panic buys for stupid wages that's their lookout.

And we all know what Mike Ashley has on the back of his shirt.

Worst thing is we didn't even need Smith when we bought him hence him being shoehorned into the team on the wing (shudder-still make me feel ill)

Ashley had a '17 Alan Smith' shirt because he considers 17 to be his lucky number. Apparently he won money in a casino betting on 17. I highly doubt he is an avid Alan Smith fan, especially considering he indirectly pays Smith's massive weekly wage for negligible on the pitch return. Due to Alan Smith I doubt Ashley considers 17 to be his lucky number any more.

Due to Alan Smith, I don't consider 17 to be a number anymore.

Big Mike will come into the office personally on the last day of the window and we'll get Dorrans, Dickson Etuhu, and one of the Caldwell brothers from Wigan. Nailed on.

That would be funny if 2 of those suggestions wouldn't stroll straight into our potential team for Sunday.

Newcastle Utd news - £5m Lallana deal gets ahead, Carroll out for derby, Barton/Enrique in contract talks,

By Gareth Lowe

Saturday 15 January 2011

£5m Lallana deal to go ahead.

The Sun reports that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has flown into the Toon’s training ground in order to discuss transfer budgets with manager Alan Pardew.

Pardew is said to be interested in a £5m bid for Southampton midfielder, Adam Lallana, among other targets, and has met with Ashley to discuss those targets, and the money available to him in the window.

Club captain, Kevin Nolan, is optimistic that funds will be made available: “Hopefully the talks between the owner and the gaffer went well and we'll be seeing new faces soon.”
