Kaizero
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro2012/news/newsid=1493384.html#france+chosen+hosts+uefa+euro+2016 France has been selected as the host nation of UEFA EURO 2016, the first UEFA European Football Championship final round to feature 24 teams. The decision was announced by UEFA president Michel Platini at the Espace Hippomène in Geneva, Switzerland. The UEFA Executive Committee reached its verdict by a majority of one from the 13 votes cast after examining the three bids – Italy, France and Turkey – on the final shortlist to stage the tournament in six summers' time. "I want first to thank our friends from Italy and Turkey; I feel for them and the feelings of frustration and sadness after months of work and I wish Italian and Turkish football good luck," said French Football Federation (FFF) president Jean-Pierre Escalettes. "For us it is a moment of intense emotions, given that in 2016 we will welcome European football to France. We will fulfil our promises and we thank our friends on the Executive Committee at UEFA. They have put their trust in us and that's what counts for us. This is a beautiful day for us." The FFF bid included 12 stadiums, of which seven would require major renovations and four would be new, in 11 cities: Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Nancy, Nice, Marseille, Paris (Stade de France and Parc des Princes), Saint-Etienne, Strasbourg and Toulouse. France has previously hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1938 and 1998, winning the latter competition, having also triumphed on home soil at EURO '84. Les Bleus added a second European crown in the Low Countries in 2000, but were beaten in the final of the 2006 World Cup by Italy.
Guest BooBoo
I was going to say "but they have just had the World Cup" before I realised it was bloody twelve years ago. Unbelievable.

huss9
not sure about the 24 team thing - will it be like WC82 with a second round of 3 teams in a group, or are we going to get into this best-placed 3rd placed team mess.
SEMTEX
The format of the final tournament will consist of six groups of four teams, followed by a round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The top two from each group would qualify in addition to the four best third-ranked sides.
huss9
hmmmm. never really been convinced by that format.
Disco
No need to have 24 fucking teams in it like. Fucking gash. Far too big and makes for a shoddy playing field. 45% of the teams taking part are going to qualify for the finals. Also it should have gone to Italy, they're in much more need of it with all there shite grounds that need doing up and could serve as a real boost for the game there but Platini is French so there you go. Probably try and get myself over though.
jdckelly
not surprising they went for france, safe bet given the problems ukraine is having with their end of 2012 tournament. and 24 teams is too much the euros works best as it was last time round and had a very high quality of tournament letting more crap teams in will only dilute the quality of it. Spot on. Love the Euros, arguably better than the WC.
Ketsbaia
24 teams is sheer stupidity. 16 is a nice, round, symmetric number and they mess it up. tbh I didn't even know who was in the running for Euro 2016
huss9
obviously gearing up to be changed to a 32 team turnamnet in the future - should have stayed at 16 - perfect for quality knock out football. now teams may be tempted to grind out a ciouple of draws to get a shot at best 3rd place team. not enough quality teams to fill 24 places. that said, not keen on a 32 team tournament but would have rather that than this lopsided fiasco. They'll never have it 32, there is only 53 UEFA nations. It'd be farcical.
