Dave
Or award zero points for a 0-0 draw. Just having a look at last season, that would mean 32 pointless () games from 380, or 8%. Interestingly removing those 64 points (one each team) would mean only two final position changes; Everton would have finished above Liverpool and the mackems would have been 11th instead of 13th. I'm bored btw.
Dave
Also, anyone like to hazard a guess at which team lost the most points? I'll give you a clue - their manager used to be ours...
Stifler
Leave it the same. Switzerland beating Spain was a good thing. Unpredictability is what makes sport so interesting, I would rather see that result than Spain 8-3 Switzerland. The attacking team should be good enough to break down the clogging team. This. Football is exciting most of the time, even if it is the bigger team winning, the attractive football they can play can be great. A simple 1-0 game can be exciting, just because it's the unexpected team winning and the other team is doing everything to get back into the game. Most of the world loves football, it's only really in North America and Oceanic where it's not as popular but it is growing in those places. Most of the ideas FIFA have came out recently is to make football more popular in these places, and it's not needed. I'd rather keep football the same and not have these places like fooball then change it beyond recognition.

I was particularly thinking of Blackburn and Stoke when suggesting this It's not only the games that finished 0-0, but games where a team set out to get this and possibly failed or nicked a goal. Aye, exactly, it would change the whole physchology of how teams go into games. You'd still get the odd really cagey game but for the most part it absolutely forces teams to go for it. Don't want any of that s*** about 'solid defensive displays are part of football'. Yes they are, but setting out to achieve a 0-0 draw is contradictory to the entire competitiveness of the sport. It's s***.

Dave
And yes, I checked. We'd still have been relegated and we still wouldn't have won the league.
The College Dropout
Apart from 2 or 3 all the 2nd round of group games have been good and exciting. Aussie match was good. Serbian match was good. Mexico-France. After a slow start it's becoming really good. 0-0's can be beautiful affairs. Even if it's just 1 team attacking and another defending. I dunno like, that first game today made me want to put my head through a wall until the goal saved me. Then again the first half of the North Korea game was captivating, as a neutral. I still think the negatives of 0-0s are far more freqent than the positives.

That plucky axis of evil You're right though, if it wasn't for the seige mentality of the game from the very 1st minute and the fact they were adoptable underdogs it would have been unbearable. I'd have been begging for a Brazil goal from the start (like Ronaldo was anyway).
Village Idiot
0-0's are only entertaining if you are invested in one of the teams and thus biting your nails as the clock runs down up. As a neutral for the most party they universally suck.

The value of a goal comes from its scarcity. If there was one every five minutes it would be shit, like basketball were somebody failing to score is more exciting than somebody finding the net. How long is it since three points for a win came in, 25 years? That made a small difference for while but the fear of losing has come to dominate the European game. Too much pressure, too much money at stake, too much media hyperbole, too many supporters who think winning is everything. If people want more open games making the goals bigger won’t help. If anything it’ll make matters worse with teams trying even harder to stop the opposition getting anywhere near their goal. The stakes have to be lowered. A more Corinthian sprit fostered, if that’s the right word. Supporters’ need to learn to enjoy the game for what it really is, not what Sky have been selling for the last twenty years. Village Idiot
I don't want games to all end 4-3 or anything, just for teams to take the pitch looking for a goal. Actually once they score the first they can protect their lead however they want. But I want them to try to score it. No goal, no point.
gazza ladra
Didn't Socrates propose cutting down the number of players per team from 11 to 9 or 8? Rather drastic change which would really favor Brazil.

morpeth mag
Twenty metre penalty for a yellow card offence if the offence occurs outside the penalty box - will stop niggling fouls Also think the clock should be for the time the ball is in play to stop time wasting - injured players to be treated on the pitch with the game continuing unless the referee decides a major injury may have occured. Make the game metric and increase the goal size to 8m not 8 yards

For starters you obviously didnt see Newcastle play away from home many times last season or if you did it was through rose coloured glasses. More seriously I would say only about 1 in 10 games I watch are exciting or classed as good games, the rest are dull, midfield, cautious affairs with no space and little incident. In fact me and my mates often hardly talk about a match afterwards because there was so little to discuss. Its got to the stage where sometimes its a good day out apart from the football. OzzieMandias
1. Allow players to pick the ball up and run with it. 2. Do away with goalposts and nets and goalkeepers and make scoring a matter of carrying the ball over the opposing touchline.
