Dalglish's best results were with the players Keegan bought. The more of them he replaced with his own turgid shite, the worse our results got.

What about Given, Hamann, Solano, Tomasson and Speed? 3 of them were huge in any success we had since, and the other 2 went on to be top European players. Yes he bought a lot of filler early on, but so did Bobby, the big difference being he was allowed to continue building after a a mid table finish and Dalglish wasn't. I'm the biggest Keegan fan going but you can't blame him for breaking up his team, if you've got different ideas to your predecessor chances are you'll need different players.

That's actually a bigger indictment of his managerial ability. He actually bought some good players which is why I never had a pop at his signing history. But the inability to put out balanced sides or buy players to compliment his battery of hard working midfield stoppers was his biggest failing in my view.

The talk of this being different to the KK situation as Liverpool 'back their managers' is a bit flawed. Yes, they may not piss him off as spectacularly, but there will come a time where they have to say No to him (be it a signing, more transfer money - whatever).

We'll see how the fans react to that. It doesn't always pay to have a manager that is as big as the club in the eyes of the fans.

Agree with Tron really (regarding his time at nufc that is). Hamann, Solano, Tomasson and Speed were all one paced to an extent. Luckily the managers after that remedied the problem by bringing in pacier high energy players like Dyer, Jenas, Robert, Bellamy, Bernard.

Also, Speed was initially brought in as a left-winger, a position in which he was becoming increasingly awful, and it took later managers to completely convert him into a central midfielder.

As for Tomasson, he was signed too early in his career and he was never a great player, most of his success came playing for Denmark or in the shite dutch league. At Milan he was mostly a bit part player and it never looked like he was suited to premiership football even at his peak. terrible signing.

Dalglish was absolute shite here, turned a side going for the title into one who looked slow, turgid and lacking in ideas unable to get out of mid-table. there's no excuse for that. mind you the timing of his sacking was idiotic, should've gotten rid that summer or gave him most of the season to turn things around.

Agreed, it was ludicrous to sack him after two draws. Another Freddie masterstroke.

The 97/98 season was a bore though, we scraped through to Wembley with one of the easiest cup runs in recent memory and then completely folded on the big day with crappy Kenny timidly playing for penalties.

Wasn't Speed converted to the centre whilst at Everton. I thought he was more a left winger at Leeds and then mostly central at Everton.

When first bought, he was shoved out wide and looked absolutely hopeless.

he'd been playing in both for a while, but it wasn't until later that he played exclusively in midfield (and as a defensive midfielder, at that!). Dalglish played him as a winger and he looked like a really bad bit of business at first.

Absolutely. Speed on the left wing and Des Hamilton on the right was Dalglish's idea of width. Even then they played more as supplementary full backs as Dalglish didn't like to see too many players in the opposition half in case we got exposed. It's amazing really when you think what we were under KK and what we ended up in Dalglish's time here. He's landed on his feet at Liverpool with a squad of quality players who will make him look fantastic as Benitez' system will suit KD down to the ground.

A squad of quality players who were nowhere near Europe when he took over.

They were the same players who should have won the league a few months earlier.

Ronaldo is talking about the Liverpool side of today not the post Keegan Newcastle United one.

Short term results don't mean that much whoever he's talking about. Dalglish had a similar effect on the squad Keegan left when he first arrived.

It wasn't that much worse than 00-01 in which Bobby was in charge. One bad season doesn't make a bad manager. He did a good job overall.

He ripped apart our best team in memory and took a gamble on unproven foreigners. All we needed was a centre half argubly, and he just ripped it apart. Will never forget that 97/98 season, really optimistic in the summer of 97. Was completely sick by the end of it, and I was only 11. Had a good day at Wembley with me Grandad like.

Aye, I used to have a season ticket with him until 02 when he passed away. Owe everything I love about this club to him like, top bloke. Missed one home game in 28 year, and that was my Dad's day of birth. Canny record :coolsmiley: . Left me 10k when he died and in the will he requested it payed for a 'season ticket for life'. Top, top bloke.

Daglish has so far done a terrific job at Liverpool, and when he had Shearer in the side he did pretty damn well when managing us. Call it coincidence if you wish.

When Shearer was out of the side he did absolute shite and signed Andreas Andersson as a replacement without a clue how to use him alongside the midfield stoppers he assembled in the same team.

3 year deal signed

Can continue his destruction of NUFC he started in '97, continued into January this year and no doubt this summer when he takes Enrique.

His summer of destruction here in '97 was summed up when he got rid of Ginola, hoping to plug the gap with the double signing of Des Hamilton and Garry Brady.
