Total of 21 'dependable' players for next season (Sammy down should go on loan) and that includes the likes of Shola and Obertan. We could easily be down to the bare bones with injuries/suspensions. Everyone agrees with that though.... but the squad is still far from small. If we go through it..... GK: Krul, Elliot and Alnwick DEF: Coloccini, Taylor, Yanga-Mbiwa, Williamson, Santon, Debuchy, Haidara and R.Taylor MID: Tiote, Anita, Cabaye, Sissoko, Bigirimana, Jonas, Marveaux, Ben Arfa and Obertan FWD: Cisse, Gouffran, Shola and Campbell That is without mentioning the various kids who could play a part and also keep in mind that a a lot of these players can play various positions thus improving the depth further more. Do we lack quality in certain areas? Hell yes. But is the squad small? Hell no. There isn't a bigger squad outside the top 7 and even the likes of Everton could be argued have a smaller squad. We have about seven or eight players with av decent amount of first team experience for the three midfield roles but only seven for the four defensive roles and only three of an acceptable standard for the three attacking roles (I refuse to include whole and obertan). And the in the midfielders we have too few in the attacking creative role. So basically we have depth but not balanced and in places not of the right quality. I also disagree RE: our squad being small, we just happen to have a lot versatile players (purposely chosen) that can cover more than one position to cover a number of positons making it seem larger than it is in numbers. We need two wide forwards/wingers and a striker. And we can sell ameobi, Jonas and obertan to balance the squad numbers if we need to. That was more to do with poor coaching and tactics than the size of the squad..... we were still putting out teams that should be beating the likes of Reading, Swansea and West Ham at home.
